Estate Sale Find

Attended an estate sale yesterday of a gentleman that had been a lifelong shooter, collector, reloaded, caster, etc. I had to wait 8 hours for them to get to the lead piled up in one corner of the guys farm shop.

They auctioned it all off as one lot. 40 pigs if a realatively hard alloy. Several bars of Oatey 50/50 solder. Some spools of solder. A couple pieces of sheet lead. And other miscellaneous ingots and cast boolits.

Got the whole lot for $75.00

Those look like lino type pigs to me. You got an awesome deal. That stuff will alloy about three parts of soft lead to one part of lion, doing the rough math sounds like you will be in casting alloy for a very long time.

I can count at least 30 of those linotype pigs there. Assuming they weigh 22 pounds each which seems standard for them, it comes out to nearly 700 pounds. At 10 cents a pound for clean linotype, I'd say you did very, very well.

Cut to the chase, how many lbs. did you end up with?

So here is the breakdown, using a cheap analog bathroom scale...

42 pigs - 809 lbs
50/50 solder - 56 lbs
Sheet lead - 35 lbs
Misc (boolits, misc ingots) - 36 lbs

So 936 lbs total, which comes out to about 8 cents a lb that I paid for it.

This guy had so much stuff that they had a 2 day gun auction back in April where they sold over 350 fire arms plus a lot of ammo and firearms related stuff. All of the stuff sold yesterday that took 8 hours to sell was "found" since April.

I also pick up most of a keg of 2400 and unique for $40 each. Another half keg of old 2400 (Hercules brand) for $7.50.

I dont know how many cases of shot gun shells they sold for 35-40 bucks. They got tired of selling reloading dies that they were selling them in lots of ten and they were only getting 50 bucks a box. There were Lyman, Herters, CH and others. There was so much it was bit overwhelming.

As in, you find that deal with a straight face. Then you go out to the parking lot and scream about it!

For the price you paid it sounds like there were other people looking to get that pile also, good score. That estate sell off sounds a little like what I`ve been doing for the last 6 months.Robert

He is probably looking down and thinking - I spent my whole life collecting all of this and in the end it just sold under a dime per pound and went to someone else! What a waste of my time / money / effort. I could have done something more useful. What value is it to him in afterlife? zero! I would be sad. But hey congrats to the OP who scored a great deal!
