Wanted: Rusted Blued Gun Part For Rust Removal Test

I bought a jug of WD-40 Rust Removal Soak and it works fantastic on tools. I let a couple of old pliers, wrenches and chainsaw spark plug wrench soak overnight and all the rust is gone. Much better and less caustic than Navel Jelly but only for soaking I think. You can paint Navel Jelly on a large part.

    Attachment 245225

I would like to try it on a blued gun part as it says it is safe for everything and it biodegradable, re-usable, non-corrosive etc. I would like to test it to see if it is safe for blueing.
Does anyone have a junk, rusted part of any type from a blued gun? Pin, slide stop, old sight etc? Doesn't matter what. I'll pay shipping and return the part if you want it back.

    Thanks.

I hadn't thought of that but yes I do. I have an old oven I used to melt lead in. I'll put some in and see what happens

As for the test. Yes, I'll make sure to report back with before and after photo's. Could be some good stuff if it leaves the blueing alone.

My bet is it will remove bluing since bluing is nothing more than controlled rust.

Contacting the manufacturer will also provide the answer. Like you I would love to find something that removed rust without affecting bluing. That would be a big selling point.

I'd bet it is close to the same formula as Evaporust. The one thing to watch for is grease and oil. Remove ALL of both that you can before soaking. Petroleum products reduce the effectiveness of Evaporust by a large percentage. Degrease and it works great.

Waiting to see what you come up with. I just used rust and blue remover and ended up sanding two complete guns since it didn’t work well. I used Brownells Ohpho blue on both. Turned out better than a factory finish.
