If I take a slick sided upper and eliminate that hump of metal that blocks the cartridge from flying back and cut a slot for charging handle, it should work? I don't think strength would be an issue as long as a super lite weight upper receiver is not used. No? And yes I will use my mill to do this. I would keep it for a right handed (normal type) upper.

the one I have uses a different style BCG so you might want to research that before you jump in to far. I could probably text you some photos if that would help.

I would recommend examining some side charging uppers before you jump in. A lot of people mill away too much material when they go the DIY route, and leave the bolt carrier partially unsupported. It probably doesn't really harm anything, but it's less than ideal, IMHO.

If you are right handed, you might want to consider milling the left side of the receiver for the side charging handle so that you use your left hand to charge so you don't break grip with the right hand.

Last side charger I did.....I just milled a slot in the right side,with out removing the deflector....and mill the right side, if your a sling shooter like I am, you will have to unsling/get out of position to change the rifle.....
or dont modify it and get a devil dog side charging conversion. getting one for my wifes rifle
