What beeswax do you guys get?

Needing to make some BP lube and going to mix it with some Crisco but I don't know what kind of Beeswax to order for best results.

You need to get what is a reasonable cost. The price of beeswax has skyrocketed in the last couple of years. If you are in an area where they keep bees, you should check them out. Even if it's not clean, you can heat it up and clean it up. It’s usually a lot cheaper than buying something that’s all clean and purified

I do not see Randy Rat as a vendor. Is he still on the forum? He had good quality beeswax, cleaned but not bleached.

Another source is thrift stores. While your scrounging for pewter also check out the candles. Quite often you can find Bees Wax candles.

I get mine from a local beekeeper, $6/#. It is raw beeswax, but it has been cleaned.

List a Want to Buy (WTB) ad for beeswax in the S&S area. Say how much you want in the add too. It shows up there from time to time.

I've bought from members when they have it. If not, some craft/hobby stores have it (Michael's is one near me).

Slumgum wax, the tail end of the bees wax after the clean stuff is floated off works just as well as the most expensive, purified wax. The bee poop and pollen just make the stuff look nasty but it does the job for a lot cheaper.
To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, the trouble with many shooting experts is not that they're ignorant; its just that they know so much that isn't so.

I bought mine from Randy Rat. I don't see him in the VS section but shop around. You don't need bleached, organic, natural, pearls, etc., the most inexpensive bricks will work https://www.google.com/search?q=bees...hrome&ie=UTF-8

I have a couple of friends who keep bees, also have bee keepers in my area. I won't pay more than $6.00 per pound, and have a few pounds in reserve. If you buy from retailers you will be paying half that per ounce factoring in shipping.

Last time I bought beeswax I bought from Amazon, pellets and really clean. About $10 a pound.
Buying local is the way to go if you want to save some money, but make sure it's good and clean. Filtering hot wax looks messy.

Randy Rat was the last I bought but I don't think he sells anymore.
Look up a beekeeping club in your state. A few calls should get you some

Caution! Please don't offer to sell any on this thread. It will save us all a bunch of grief. Please take this as a friendly reminder.

I purchased some dirty beeswax and cleaned it myself. I got 15 lbs for a dollar a pound and spent most of a day cleaning using a water bath , letting it solidify where the wax is lighter then the water and solids. Then scrape the solids off bottom layer, then remelt and filter thru a double layer of old t-shirt and start the melt, scrap, remelt and filter process over 3 times and it came out a a clean yellow color. The last filter cycle went into some Dollar Store bread pans filled about 2/3's of the way, I used the old t shirts as fire starter this winter for the wood stove. I used 2.5 gallons of water per 5#s of wax. Lots of work but sure was interesting.

By the way don't dump the bee waste or water on the ground unless you want an invasion of bees, don't ask me how I know. I think we had every bee within a 5 mile radius coming around to collect their share. Also any pan you use to melt or mould the wax in will be unusable for anything but melting wax.

I never found t-shirts to work for more than a couple of pounds and then they plug up. Any secrets to filtering?
