What's the Theory on the RCBS 38-175-RN?

I'll try these out in a Handi Rifle loaded over IMR 4227 in Starline 360DW brass. The crimp groove is so high, most of the boolit is below the case mouth. I assume it was designed this way, so my question is why? My guess would be to eliminate more space in the case to get a better case fill.

    Any other thoughts?

The bottom round is a 360DW boolit. The top case is a 38 Special case for comparison.

Maybe overall length was a concern

It looks to have as much of the body of the boolit in the brass, as would a 38 wadcutter.

Come to that, it looks like a DEWC, but with a gas check and a bulbous nose.

Maybe it was designed for a higher velocity with relatively small powder charges ?

Are current N frame Smith's still using the shorter cylinders?

I have nothing to add to the original question. Only popped in to say that those are some beautiful looking cast boolits!
