185 gr SWC for .45 acp

I'm thinking I need a mold for a 185 gr SWC along the lines of the H&G 68, I'd even go for 175 or 180 gr.

    Any ideas?

buy by chance a mold lyman 452389, along with others to the son of a shooter that pass away.
At first I could not make that boolit work in my 45 ACP and I wanted to sell it. Now that it works well in the gun, I do not want to let go of it. Boolits of 185 grains with almost pure lead alloys and 176 with harder alloys. Always in .452
I recommend it a lot, although I have not done exhaustive tests yet, it impresses me very accurately.

The H&G 130 is a 185 design. It has a much shorter nose than a 68 or 69 200 gn. It is more difficult to get to feed reliable in a 1911. The 130 is like Federal and Winchester match ammo.
There is a 155 or 160 gn. Mold that has a long thin nose. I know 2 people that is using it for bullseye pistol and claim it to be accurate. It has to be loaded heavy to cycle the 1911.

NOE has a 454-167-SWC , which is a 167 grain truncated cone design with a long nose .
The NOE 453-197-SWC design which would be my choice for most likely to feed well and is still under 200 grains .

One of the 45 ACP boolit molds I use is a Redding/Saeco 062. It's a truncated cone 170 grain boolit that feeds well in my 1911.

    And the mold casts beautifully.

The Lyman 452389 feeds perfectly in my series 70 Gold Cup with an 11lb spring and 3.5gr of Bullseye....

I have a Mihec 185 4 cav brass mold with the option of hollow points.

It works good in my 1911 with any load that I have tried.
I size to .452 and load away.

Try to get somebody to send you some samples to try'

I'm liking my Saeco #065 185gr. SWC. I use it in both my Ruger P97 DC and my Ruger Blackhawk convertible.. Great light weight 45 bullet. Gp

Question is why are you wanting a 185gr.swc when a H&G68 200gr.SWC ?? When I was shooting for the Army (USAMU)we tested a number of 185swc for the 1911 we could not find one that passed our requirements, just had trouble feeding mostly ,we changed OAL a number of times and a couple of our NM Good cups handled them o.k. With Wilson combat match barrels.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Two of my favorite 45acp molds are saeco # 68 and saeco # 130 4 cavity , they are just a pleasure to cast with and shoot good to for me .

    Why? Because.

    I have a 4 cavity H&G 130, I have the Lyman 452389. I have a NEI 178 gr TC, I have both the Lee and NOE 155 gr SWC.

I just love .45 ACP boolits.

I also have the RCBS 201-KT, RCBS 200 SWC, Ohaus 200 SWC, H&G 78, Lachmiller 45-200 SWC, several 45 ACP hollow point molds and some various Lee .45 ACP molds.

I have more .45 ACP molds than any other caliber. 31 or so at last count.

The two I cast and use the most? The RCBS 201 KT and the NOE 155.

In 9mm I shoot a lot of heavy and slow boolits. 150-155 gr.

I have yet to do the same in .45 ACP, I've got a bunch of 225-230 RN molds. I should work on a soft shooting ball load.

    Because is
As good of a reason as any. Each to their own
I find The 230 RN is good when pushed a little slower than most

I have three 5 cavity NOE 167 gr molds and 3 5 cavity 200 gr molds. The 167s cast at 170 and are very accurate out to 25 yards. I shoot the 200 (which fall at 215 gr) at 50.

Both cast well, but the hg130s almost cast themselves...

I've never had an issue with the 130 feeding. I've built many 1911s that feed fine, and I do shoot a good bit of bullseye...

The Lyman 630 works best for me at 50 yards using Bullseye.

I like your reasoning. How about a no-lube groove mold for coated bullets?

Mihec makes this one,I'm tempted to try even though H&G 130 is working for me. I have Mihec 200 NLG HP mold which is a piece of art. I also like their Lyman style slug mold very much.

I have some Magma dual cavity molds that are carbon copies of the 452630 and the Seaco #130. Both are very accurate and easily as accurate as the H&G68 which I used to have a mold for.

If you have a friend with a mill, you could mill the bevel base of the top of a Lee H&G 68 clone. This will give you a flat based boolit that weighs roughly 185 grains and still have the nose shape of the original boolit.

I think what you are looking for is the Saeco #66, a 180 grain similar to the H&G #68. The Saeco #65 is the BB version and what I have. They function better than the H&G #130 but I shoot mainly #68's.
