I would try to find a used Remington 700 ADL, the cheaper one with the blind magazine. I found a 270 couple years ago for 250, never had been fired. As for new, it's hard to find an entry level bolt gun with iron sights on it.

You could about buy a Stevens 200 series and have sights installed on it within that budget. Last I saw retail was about $300 on em.

buy the russian version - You could buy 5 Mosins for well within that budget and have iron sights.

In all seriousness though, Gunbroker or Auction Arms either one have several Savage 30-06 with iron sights listed at well below the $400 price tag.

New or used is fine as long as I can find it locally. I have a bunch of 30-06 reloading components, but no 30-06.

In your home state try Wally world for a new Stevens 200 for around $300.99. They shoot great out of the box. If you want a 270 etc just loosen the barrel nut and screw in a new tube. Presto a new caliber gun in under 15 min. I have 2 actions and enough tubes to go from 221FB to 30-06 with just a few stops in between and many will shoot bug holes (5 round) with @#$@%$#@ boolits at 100 yds. Yes you will have to add sights.

Marlin XL7 for about $300, then spend the other $100 for iron sights for it.

I would not overlook the numerous "sporterized" WW1 rifles out there. The Eddystones and Springfields have evrything you are asking for.

I just took a look at Gunbroker and there are numerous 30-06 "Sporterized" iron sighted rifles for $200 and up..

Well, I ended up finding a savage 111f w/iron sights in near perfect shape for $300 out the door at a local pawn shop. Thanks for all the input though.

That Savage will very likely be a real shooter, they almost always are.

    Great choice.
