Exclamation A dud CCI round !

    Oh, the horror! The horror!

After four decades and countless thousands of CCI rounds fired, it finally happened. I got a dud. A true dud, since the gun has a firing pin strike like the hammer of Thor.

I'm torn between mounting it in a shadow box on the wall, or disassembling it to see whether it has no primer compound at all, or just has a gap in it.

I think I'll mount it. After all, it's so rare that it may have collector value.

It happens. Did you try rechambering it in a different angle or position to give it another go? Usually that does the trick. When the loaded in the primer charge it might have left a void right there.

A “serious” dud collector would probably trade you a dozen T-22 or Golden Bullet duds for that prize specimen.

My Winchester 1906 S-L-LR with scuzzy bore gets a steady diet of such range pickups. Few are the ones that its huge firing pin won’t set off.

I have experienced many CCI primer duds. Only one Winchester dud.

Quite frankly, I am AMAZED at the few duds that we experience, even with "junk" ammo given the astronomical number of rounds that are manufactured each year. AMAZED, I tell you, AMAZED!!

I pick up 22lr range duds off the ground/floor all the time. They invariably fire in my guns.
I don't know why people have this issue.

In younger days, I would have hit it with a hammer, or thrown it in a fire--

just to be sure it really was a dud.

I've cleaned out the dud box at the shooting range more than once.
Then plink with the misfires using an old revolver and multiple hammer hits if needed.
But there's always some rounds that still won't fire off so I'll pull the bullets to shoot from smooth bore muzzle loaders.
There's a lot more .22lr duds then some folks would imagine.
Some of the primer material can often be found to have flaked off and mixed in with the powder.
But some brands definitely have better priming compound than others.
The target below was fired from a smooth bore black powder pistol loaded with .22lr bullets.

Paul Harrell tests the reliability of .22 ammo... Even CCI had a couple duds...

I've never had a CCI dud using even blazer ammo. Never had an Aguila dud either.

I'm just curious as well . . . did you rehabber in a different location and try to see if it would discharge the second strike? I haven't shot thousands of CCIs but over the years did have some duds on various brands - most went bang the second time around. I stopped shooting 22s during the big shortage - in fact sold a couple of rifles and wish I hadn't. I was in a Blairs Farm Supply a couple of weeks ago and wandered down their ammo aisle - saw that they had a good supply of 22s on the shelf - kind of got the itch to possibly pick up a brick or two and get the little Henry lever action out.

Had a 22 out Saturday, was shooting up some mayonnaise jar ammo--ammo a buddy had given me after his parents passed away. Cleaning out the house he found several bottles of 22 ammo, shorts, longs and long rifles. Mostly Remington. The guess is, it was from the late 40's from before his dad moved to Michigan from West Virginia.

Less than 5% dud rate, not bad for the vintage. Some of the shorts have been pretty whimpy. The long rifles still hit pretty hard.

My buddy left half of a 100 round box of winchester 22s in the plastic box on my range. Probably had been out there a couple weeks and the box was partially filled with water. All of them went off but 1 and another one or two were wimpy. It was a pretty interesting test.

Heck, no. That would have destroyed the collector value!
