Remembering the fallen for Memorial Day

FINAL MISSION OF SP4 ROBERT B. CURRAN

Final Mission of SP4 Robert B. CurranSP4 Robert B. Curran, SP4 Marshal E. Naffziger, and SSGT James C. Reamer were armor crewmen, and SP4 Robert D. “Sam” Severson and SP4 Rodrick Troup infantrymen, all serving with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On August 5, 1971, their unit was on its seventh day of a 30-day armored combat patrol consisting of nine M113 armored personnel carriers (APC’s) and three M551 Sheridan tanks. The lead APC was being operated by SP4 Severson with the other four soldiers traveling on top of the vehicle. While crossing a rice paddy, a command-detonated mine was exploded, flipping Severson’s APC on its top. He and the four men riding above were killed instantly. At that same moment, Viet Cong hidden in the creek bed and tree lines surrounding the paddy opened fire. In the ensuing firefight, another B Trooper from one of the Sheridan crews, SSGT Johnny E. Jones, was fatally injured by small arms fire. Two others were wounded. Fifteen minutes later, the enemy broke contact and disappeared into the jungle. Dismounted patrols searched the area and found no trace of them or any evidence of enemy casualties. A medivac was requested, and the six casualties and two wounded were “dusted off” to the 75th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang. After examining the wrecked APC, it was surmised that the blast was caused by 150 pounds of nitrostarch, undoubtedly constructed from dud Allied rounds. All personal items were removed from the damaged vehicle, and the track was stripped of its weapons and radios. Using cables, two other tracks then righted the APC, and it was lifted from the paddy by a CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter to a waiting M88 Recovery Vehicle which carried it back to base. B Troop then resumed its patrol.

It is unfortunate that the meaning of Memorial Day has been lost to most people as just another shopping day.The individuals who remember are those who have lost someone

To many its the official weekend to get the boat out of storage or open the swimming pool. Lets not forget those who served so that we are free to do these things.

We should never forget the ultimate sacrifices made by the men and woman who paid the ultimate price .. and a renewed effort should be made toREMIND those who have forgotten it or have never been educated it.
May God Bless those who paid the price as well as their families.

In memory of Duane - KIA July 3, 1969 - it's coming up on 50 years now but never forgotten.

Over the years I have found a thread like this doesn't get a lot of attention.
I thought it was because folks just didn't care.
I found out a lot of the folks the pain was and is just too great.

For all the Bobs that didn't come home, this is your day

This year for the first time in decades a flag flies at my home. The reason for not do this for many years is I was and am still dealing with the death of a cousin in Vietnam and the death of the first Native American woman who died while serving this country. This year marks 50 years since I took the oath and finding out that I may not be truly free of the military yet. The nation is being torn apart by the socialist in our government, by the war mongers, by those that can't stand our President and most of all by many world nations that think America is weak, not willing to fight to exist and lastly as a world power I time has come and gone. All I know is that America is not a pushover country and any nation that thinks we are is in for a bad awakening, just like what happened in WWII. We may appear to be divided, which to some extent we are, but the bottom line is never get into a family dispute and yes we are a family that makes this up great nation. It is time to standup and be counted or we just might have to learn a new language, may see many lost, and lastly we just might see how bad things can really be.
May we all on this day remember what it has cost to be a free nation and it has been very costly as freedom has always been and always will be.
May we return to a God fearing Nation, a truly free nation and most of all a Nation feared the World over.
Beware of a government that fears its citizens having the means to protect themselves.

I'm working today and am answering calls from mostly international customers looking for engineering support. I'm saddened by every call from an American who forgot today was a holiday...

I always remember about a Uncle I did not know that my mom had told me about that was KIA in WW2 . He was buried 5 times after the family had him be where they wanted him to be . I still have the flag that was use to buried him where the family wanted him to be near them at the time . It have 48 stars. Like was stated this day is not really remember only of those that lost a love one. For me today for the ones that past service to our country. and veterans day is for the vets that is still with us. May those that past find peace.

When guns are outlawed only criminals and the government will have them and at that time I will see very little difference in either!
