I have a 686-3 with an 8-3/8 barrel that came from the factory cut with grooves for Millet scope rings. Unfortunately, the gun didn't come with rings.
S&W only did the mounting cuts for a very short time(1983-84?). Millet hasn't made any of these rings for a long time.
I have been looking for rings to fit this thing for right at 2 years now.
I finally found a set. I had to pay premium price to get them but they are mow mounted on the revolver and have a scope installed.
I took it to the range today. Due to the weather, all shooting was indoors.
It took a few shots to get things lined up but the results are promising. I didn't fire any jacketed or full magnum loads in it.
All I had with me were 38 special cast loads but these did well enough that I am going to get a good rest and take it outdoors and see what it will do at longer ranges.
With 3.5 of Bullseye or 5.0 of CFE pistol under 158 grain boolits this gun was doing 1.25 to 1.5 inches at 25 yards from a very poor rest.
I was getting a lot of movement because I wasn't in anything remotely like a comfortable position and was balancing the gun on top of an ammo box for a rest.
The movement I was seeing in the scope was about the size of the groups I was shooting.
Like I said, promising.
Different boolit profiles gave slightly different impact points. Not enough to matter in a hunting situation, but enough to see on the target.
I can't wait to get this thing outdoors with a good rest and see what it can really do.
