Model 70 Winchester

Ladies and gentlemen, for a while now I have been looking for a Winchester model 54 in 30GOVT’06 (30-06). Today at the gun show I stumbled across an EARLY model 70 4 digit serial number made in 1937 that was in good shape for being 82.Has what I believe is a Redfeild? Peep sight on it. Picked it up and but it back down on the shelf a few times until I finally decided to buy it. Paid six Benjamin’s for it and will be the rifle I take if I ever get lucky enough to draw a moose permit here in Maine. Now to work up some cast bullets for it.

Had to do a little research on what clover leaf meant. Would have never know it was referring to the tang.

Thank you I’ve pretty much figured if I want it I might as well get it. I can always make more money and these old Winchester’s are getting hard to find. Btw I used to live in Logan By the old AL’s sporting goods location.

I wasn’t either but it looks like it left the factory that way? Anyone know if they were?

My ca. 1942 Winchester Model 70 does have the receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts, also has a stripper clip slot and the left side of the receiver bridge is drilled and tapped for a Lyman 48 receiver sight. My Winchester 54 has the rear receiver bridge drilled and tapped on top for a scope base, and the left sidewall for a Lyman 48, but the top of the receiver ring was not factory drilled and tapped, but done afterward before I got it.

The sight is a Lyman 48. I have a model 70 made in 1939. In 30-06 of course. I wish it were in 7x57 Mauser.
