Remington Roller

I just got a Rem. Rolling block and wanted to field strip it for a good cleaning. I’ve removed the pin holding the block but for some reason it won’t come out. It has no markings to help identify the model. It’s been rebarreled with a Numrich 45-70 buffalo but no marks on the receiver. Any ideas on why the block won’t come out ?

They are super easy to clean everything. I would start by removing the butt stock, loosen the main spring and drop out the lower tang (and trigger) and you will see how everything fits together. Rollers are one of the actions that you can't go wrong with taking it all apart.

I did find a paten date under the rear tang sight.

I’d also like to replace the target sights with barrel mounted sights. Maybe a rear ladder flip up for a 45-70. Any idea where I could gets those.

Look at MVA (Montana Vintage Arms) they may have one. Another may be BACO ( Buffalo Arm company), for an original Gun Parts corp

You're talking about a ladder sight that mounts on the barrel? The links I gave are to ladder type sights that mount on the tang - you're saying that's what you have now?

Yes. I have a tang mounted peep sight now and wanted the barrel mounted ladder.

I cant see the advantage of a barrel mounted sight over a tang sight unless the gun is just being used for shorter range hunting ? even in that case a Marbles tang sight works so much nicer than "buckhorn sights "

I have that MVA Rough an Ready barrel sight on a Remington Rolling Block I am just now completing. It sorta sounds like like your rifle but with a few differences -as always. It will be a hunting rifle. The bases is a smokeless 1901 military action I picked up for a little less than $200 and cleaned it up. It had some deeper pitting on the sides than I thought. It took a lot to remove most of it. I stopped because I did not want to remove too much metal.
Over ten years ago I had Badger Barrels make me a 28 inch half octagon 50 cal barrel blank. I was torn between chambering it for the 50-70-Gov and the bigger 50-90 SS and thought either would be great for elk and went with the 50-90SS.
I found a $40 plain Jane two piece Turkish walnut blank on ebay and had CPA-Shuttelworth turn the blank to fit the roller. They do the nice job of semi-inletting for not too much cost.
I mounted the MVA barrel sight and up front is an early beaches type combo post and ring.

I thought the barrel sight would great but I find it very hard to see. The fixed flat bar with teeny tiny notch goes invisible when sighting in good light and poor light like early morning, under tree cover or last light, basically I have a shotgun sight.

If you have good eyes maybe try the Buffington sight made for the trapdoor Springfield. Or maybe look for an original earlier model trapdoor. Course these were made for a round tapered barrel. Use new mounting screws as the originals if I remember right were some oddball thread. Frank.
