7x57 loads

I have a Winchester featherweight in 7x57 that will be used as my first attempt at loading cast for a rifle. I have some 168gr cast that measure .285 gc. Powder I have on hand is titegroup; bullseye; w231; power pistol and clays all of which I cannot find any load data. Any data with these powders is appreciated.

I have two loads I shoot in 7x57. My practice load is the "soup can" bullet from the Midsouth mold, cast of 50/50 wheel weights to pure with 2% tin, water dropped, the sized to .287 and lubed with NRA formula lube. I shoot it with ten grains of 700X and this load is cheap enough and because I can cast with a six cavity mold, I shoot it in quantity. I used to shoot ten grains of Green Dot until I ran out of Green Dot. Both Green Dot and 700X are plenty accurate for my practice, I rarely shoot it from a bench.

My killing load is the Lyman 287308, which is hollow pointed, cast of the same alloy, but air cooled and pushed with 29 grains of IMR 3031. The bullets weighed 166 grains lubed and checks. According to the RCBS cast manual with a similar bullet, it should be going 1950 FPS at the muzzle.

Haven't tried cast in my Brazilian Model 1908 yet. Bought either 1k or 500 Nosler 168gr Custom Comps from SPS a few years ago, probably a lifetime supply either way. Given it's miserable bore condition I wouldn't expect decent groups with cast either.

I shoot a 7x57 chambered M1 Garand with 150gr Lyman Louverin design sized at .285." with 30.1gr of IMR4895 at 2100fps. Its a lighter bullet than your requested load data and I'm building load for a semi-auto versus your bolt action but it's an idea of what you can do with a 7x57 with cast. The picture shows my last group at 100 yards.

My 7x57 is a military FN Mauser. I use a load of 29gns 3031 behind an RCBS boolit that weighs 143.8gns, sized to 0.287". At 1860fps it is a very good and accurate load.

I guess it goes to show that there are quite afew people today that are knowledgeable in the aspects of the 7X57 round. It`s easy to throw dirt on something and nay say it without actually knowing what you are talking about. I might suggest you read the article about `The modern 7X57` in this months issue of Handloader magazine, it might take the blinders off your eyes.Robert

You misunderstood, Robert. The OP was asking if anyone shoots the 7x57mm when the answers hadn't come yet. The way I see it anyway.

I mostly use an original style (semi Loverin) RCBS 28-168-FN cast bullet in my sportered M95 Chilean Mauser. Cast of #2 alloy I leave them as cast at .287 and just GC and lube in a .288 H&I die in the Lyman 450. I load them over 25 gr H4895 and use a 3/4 gr Dacron filler. Velocity (22" barrel) is 1860 fps at 29,000 psi +/-. Accuracy with Redfield receiver and blade front sight holds right at 2 moa at 100 and 200 yards.

Always had a soft spot for Mannlicker stocks!
My Mauser is still unfired by me. Has a sewer pipe for a bore. The outside was so beautiful I didn’t check the inside of the barrel! Duh!

Been using 19gr of IMR4227 with the lyman 160gr bullet with good results

Check the Lyman Cast Bullet handbook for data for the 7X57.

The older 44 and 45 loading manuals also had cast bullet data.
Your .285 diameter bullets probably need to be .288 or .289 to work in that barrel.
