Winchester 94 AE mount options

Since searches have come up with next to nothing, I figured i'd aske here:

OTHER than the XS scoutrail, what are the options for a small scope/RDS on an AE 94?

Right now, said rifle HAS the Scoutrail on it now with an RDS. Its my sons rifle, and it may not be right for him.

I'm looking for another option, preferably a Pic rail, to allow the RDS to be a bit closer to his eye.

The Winchester 94AE has 2 holes D/T'd atop the front receiver ring to accept a front scope mount base; and a single hole D/T'd atop both receiver sidewalls near the rear for a rear scope mount base.

That setup will accept most scopes, save those with huge objective lenses.

However, I have also used just the rear base to successfully mount a red dot sight - BUT...…… you may not have to spend a red cent.



A red dot sight can be placed anywhere on the rifle where it will zero, as red dot sights have infinite eye relief.

What's more important for using a red dot sight is the proper technique - shooting with both eyes open. (except for those folks with a serious vision issue)

When both eyes are open, the red dot should superimpose on the desired target, beit paper or game. (yes, it takes practice)

IME, red dot sights work best when they/re NOT close to the shooters eye - the longer eye distance produces an unblocked view for the non-aiming eye.

Sorry that I was not as clear as I could have been.

Right now, my son's 94AE has a Scoutrail setup on it, with a Holosun RDS. He likes is well enough, bit I think I made a mistake in setting up his rifle how it would work for me, rather than how it would work for him.

There are times when he cannot miss with this setup, busting targets and rocks from 25-120 yards. Other times he is all over the place.
Once we got his eyes checked and some glasses, this improved. He is also due ofr another check now.
AND the 14 year old hormones are kicking in, so it MAY all stem from his interest, but he likes shooting well enough.

What ive done lately is to dial him back to 25 yards, seeking smaller groups, rather than the 55 yards+ that we usually practice at.
Sometimes I forget that he has been only shooting CF rifles a few years..vice a few decades.

So, my point being that I was considering another optic, such as a compact scope.

But, ive also got him shooting a scoped pellet rifle, as one issue that I see is that he has not developed good control of his wobble. Hoping that will help.

It sounds like the issue is the workman, and not the tools.

Practice makes perfect - and the only cost is ammo...……

I would dial him back to a .22RF until his shooting improves...………………….

That's the thing- with some rifles he is dead nuts with.

It IS the workman, but I want to make things a bit easier for him.

standard peep.
The RDS gives us a bit more leeway when its dusky or under trees in deer season.

I WAS intending to remove the RDS, and put a receiver peep, like a Williams, on it for the summer and let his shoot like that some more. I may still
