    356 Winchester brass options

    Hello
My favorite rifle for hogs is a 356 Winchester Marlin 336. I run 46.5 g of tac with a magnum primer and Speer 220. At 47 my primers started flattening and got a donut around the strike. I use cast 357 mag bullets also. I'm running low on brass and wonder has any one actually formed any brass from 308 or used 358 brass? I made a few from 308 just using my rcbs die set. Seems easy enough. I only loaded 42 g powder. They cycle but haven't fired yet. Also wondering if with similar charge is poi going to change with different brass. Could relegate the 308 to the cast bullets as a worst case scenario. Anyone e actually do this yet? Josh

Use 307 brass. There is plenty out there.
If you can't find any, I have plenty and could sell you some.

I have used a lot of 308 brass in my Marlin and M94. Both work fine. I’d recommend working back up to your load with the reformed brass.

307 brass is easiest, 444 Marlin brass can be sized to 356 Win, no special dies needed, lotsa case lube, use the seating die then the sizing die, go slow, draw from and turn before full-size. Hornady, Starline make 444. 444 Brass will need trimming.

Making .356 brass might be a good way to dispose of a lot of that short .444 brass.

Yes, agree on the 307 brass, but also the Marlins do cycle 308 brass .

Joshua, it depends on how froggy I am feeling on case forming day. The best way I have found is to anneal the necks, lube well, then run through the 356/358 sizer die. I may have annealed one batch again after final forming, but that was overachieving. Just running through the sizer is fine, but you may lose a few pieces of brass along the way.
I would not use 307 or 444 brass myself because plentiful and cheap 308 works so well. I can tell no difference in function with either rifle; just work your loads up again.
