Many years ago, when I was doing police work, I bought this S&W Model 17-5 revolver to use as a practice gun. It was the same size and heft as my S&W 586 revolver. It fit in the same duty holster too. So I could use it to run through the practice qualification tests on the gun range. Shooting 22's was a lot more cheap than shooting 38 specials and 357 magnums for practice. The PD would give you 50 rounds of 38 specials to shoot a month. But if you wanted to practice more you needed to buy your own ammo then. The only detractor was there are no speed loaders for the 22, so one had to be pretty quick to reload for the 18 round rapid fire test part. Sometimes I got to practice when they were testing officers on the range and they had openings. I was sort of proud when the range master would berate someone for fumbling around and not getting all their shots off in time. He would point to me and say, that I did it without using speed loaders, so why couldn't they do it with speed loaders.

That Henry Lever gun does have some really nice wood on it. I don't know where Henry gets their wood, but they sure do make a lot of guns with nice wood on them.

As a kid I had basically the same rifle except the rear sight had a peep on the leaf, and the front sight had a hood around the sight blade. This one has a notch on the rear sight and a beaded blade up front.



According to my searching this rifle was made in 1938. This series of rifles did not have a separate action. The action and barrel are one piece.



It was drilled and taped for a side saddle scope mount. Neither was included with the rifle.



The bolt handle had relief ground for a scope.



The bore is as shiny as a new dime, and the muzzle is in great shape, as is the plastic buttplate. The little rifle is a very fine shooter.

Ruger American 22LR

This is my first year (1939) Marlin 39A, I purchased in 1997. It was all gunked up from years of neglect, and missing the firing pin. I didn't bother with it until a couple years ago. The rifle was stripped, cleaned, and the firing pin replaced. It now functioned perfectly. I added a Marbles Tang Sight, as the gun was factory drilled and tapped for it. Some case colors are still visible, and its got some long ago cold blue to the barrel. The bore is perfect, and it shoots fine. 4 digit serial #.

Some .22LR accuracy potential from European point of view:


Its an Anschutz M54 made in 1978.
I'm using it for competition shooting in the kneeling position (with 1-point sling, shooting-jacket, special shoes, kneeling-roll, shootingglasses...).

The thing is more accurate then I can shoot (-->> what my eyes can keep seeing clearly in a 60shot match..)

I have two Anchutz rifles...But nothing like yours. They were my first and second rifles many years ago. That is a fine rifle.

I used to have three....one was a .222 that I sold in a regrettable moment of foolishness.
