    Melting Lead and Drinking Beer

I recently had a visit from my 27 year old son who I hadn’t seen for over two years. It was a great visit. He stayed for over two weeks and helped out on the farm, with some of the work that is better suited to a younger man than me.

Anyway, Saturday afternoon I said, OK that’s enough. Let’s take a break, drink some beer and melt some lead.( for ingots) I’m still using a skillet and my range scrap takes a bit of time to melt. All the better, more time to do the « male bonding thing ».

Then all of a sudden, oh ****! We’re out of propane and neither of us wanted to get get behind the wheel to go to the hardware store to get more. What to do? Well let’s plug in the electric pot and make some boolits. We made over 500 230 grain, 30 cal. Black-outs. And then enjoyed a good meal my wife had prepared.

It all made me very happy and thankful.

    Sounds GREAT.

My DAD, been gone 30yrs+. I give anything to cast bullets with him again, have a beer and smoke our Pipes Together.

You had a wonderful time together, great, just Great.

I can't wait until I live closer to my son so we can do more things together.

Thank you for being smart enough to not get behind the wheel after your beers. Nothing is worth taking that chance.

Just a note about getting behind the wheel. I’ve done it and a lot of us others, I am sure have too. It’s not about us. It’s about the others. Don’t do it!

It sounds like you both had a good time. And I'll add my complements on being responsible. Good Job.

I also like my beer and often drink one while waiting on the lead in my pot to melt. I try to exercise good hygiene while doing this. I also keep the number of beers low enough that they don't effect my ability to preform the work safely.

I am cautious with lead. I had a scare with a blood test for lead. I understand more now. I won’t eat while casting or making boolits. However, a few beers if you’re up wind, I Hope won’t hurt.

That sounds like a great time. There's nothing like spending time with family.

I wish I was closer to my dad. We've never been close; different personalities and interests. He hates my gun stuff. He's stressed a lot and not much fun to be around.
It's different with my own boys and me. I spend as much time with them as I can as they grow up, and take an interest in their interests, even if I'm not terribly interested.

My son lives 60 miles away. He doesn`t cast but does reload a little.
He comes over pretty often to hunt and shoot with me and some of the rest of the family.
I have been retired for some time now and have the long wet SW Oregon winters to cast and load for them.
It`s always good to get the family together to shoot.
I need help shooting up my supply of components and lead....dale
