Thread: Anyone like H335 for 30-30 and 30-06?

    Anyone like H335 for 30-30 and 30-06?

I'm thinking about trying H335. My manuals show it's usable across the board for 30-30, and the older Lyman manuals show it in some 30-06 applications. So, does anyone like this powder? How does it do for cast in both calibers? I use 748 for full power 30-30 cast loads, so that's what I'm looking at mostly.

Obviously fast rifle powders aren't ideal for jacketed in 30-06, but if I have some I'll probably end up using it there too. Has anyone used H335 in this application? How about cast '06 loads?

All comments and advice are appreciated.

    H335 works great in .30-30.

DO NOT USE IN .30-'06, because suitable charges will leave too much free airspace in the case, ignition will be erratic and you may likely ring your chamber. Same goes for 748, Ball C2.

Use magnum primers. As Outpost said, not an '06 powder. I've used it in jacketed .223, 22-250,.243,&.308 where it works fine. The muzzle blast fireball at dusk or dawn is OMG.

H335 and h322 are great powders. Especially if you have a modern 45-70 like a bfr or Ruger no1. H322 is my main go to powder any more I love it as much as I do real black

Thanks for the replies. Looks like H335's out on the 30-06. I was hoping for some crossover but 30-30 is my main goal.

Definitely not a good choice for the '06. I recall shooting in a HP rifle match years ago and one of the guys was using it in his M1. Bang, bang, boom! Nothing damaged, just some huge fireballs that were very visible in daylight.

Does it make fireballs in its preferred applications? I'm not keen on blinding myself.

I used 335 long ago in 30-06 and 32-40. I really never had any problems with it.

More recently, I got some pulldown milsurp equivalent, WC 844, from Jeff Bartlett (www.gibrass.com) for use in 223, 30 Herrett, 30-30 and other guns. After trying a jug, I went back and bought 2 more. I love the stuff. Also IMO, Jeff's service is great and his prices are good ($99 + s&h + Hazmat for 8 lbs).

I used H335 in a 30 wcf Model 94 rifle with 26"bbl. I shot 308291 solids and hollow pointed and I was getting about 2" groups at 80 yards using 26.5 grains of powder. Then used the HP'd version to kill a doe at about 40/45 yards. My rifle has a vintage Lyman tang sight on it which helps me see the sights.

Check the Hogdon web site for load data they list loads for 30/30 and 30/06 I used to use H335 in 30/06 with 130 gr. jacketed with very good results in the 1970's for coyotes

I'm looking at buying from Bartlett, I'm close enough to drive over there and cut shipping out altogether.

From my brothers Mohawk 600 18-1/2” 6mm Rem barrel the H335 fireball was about 3’ wide! But it was a buck cheaper than IMR so we used it, I have a bottle now but it’s priced the same as others.

I have used H335 in the 8x57mm mauser and while it is not the best powder for the mauser, it does a decent job accuracy wise.

This is interesting. I never considered H335 for the 30-30. In the 223, H335 gives the best accuracy, IMO.
