What cartridge is 800x really good for ?

I have a couple unopened pounds that I brought during the shortage as a last option for 9mm and 44mag. It doesn’t seem to have much of a fan base due to its poor metering.

I have a chargemaster , while a little slower for small charges, can make the poor metering manageable.

Any recommendations on go to loads?

I had good accuracy results with 800X in .45 ACP with cast bullets of various weights, but don't see why it wouldn't work well in other cartridges. The poor metering will keep me away from using any more of it.

It’s a excellent magnum shotgun powder and I use it in 10 gauge 3 1/2” with lead shot. I have read that it does good in 38 plus P in snubbies as well. The older IMR reloading guides given away at powder retailers included a bunch of data for many cartridges with 800X. The current Hodg., Win. and IMR guides should have most of that data as well.

I have used it in 38 spl(so-so) 32 mag and 327(very good) and 45 acp with 200 grain swc (pretty good).

    Directly from the book
This propellent has applications similar to hi Skor 700x. It's burning rate is conductive to obtaining high velocities in certain handgun cartridge applications d w
I see it's listed for 44mag and 357 sig not a whole lot in my Lyman 49th my cast book might do better but i can't get to it right now

Looks like 44mag is where I am going to give it a try.

    Thank You!

I bought 8 lbs during the shortage I use it in 44 mag. Does well but is as others state it does not meter well. My dillon measures work he best with it but still vary by +/- 2 tenths.

It has nothing in common with 700x, at all. 800x is a mid range powder, somewhere between Unique and Bluedot. It's a shame it has such large and random flake shapes, as otherwise it is a phenomenal powder. It can produce great top end 45 acp ammo, it's a great choice in any handgun. Hand weighed, 800x has produced some very impressive accuracy. HS-6 is not a bad alternative, but I hate dealing with the super fine ball powders, plus it never performed as well as 800x. It seems Hodgdon is trying to get people to switch from 800x to CFEpistol, another similar powder that measures better. Unfortunately CFEpistol has no use in shotguns, where 800x excels with mid weight loads, especially slugs and buckshot.

That's the only thing I use it for. Hand weighed charges for my 200gr 10mm cast loads.

I use a lot of it in my 45 acp guns; it doesn't meter well, but the velocity and accuracy are tough to beat. It smokes 185 grain jwords.

The flake shot shell powders work, for me, in an RCBS Little Dandy powder measure that uses fixed cavity rotors. I've turned those rotors enough to know what feels right and wrong.
