    Use of Cup Points, Question

What are the main uses for cup points on cbs?
I saw on a thread someone using them for high velocity rounds where a full HP in soft alloy might cause fragmentation, etc. I think it was in a 10 mm.
Is this right, or are there other reasons for casting cup points?
    Regards,

Cup points allow a bit more expansion than a WFN boolit. At higher velocities (i.e. magnum handgun) a cup point might be preferred over a WFN for a bit more expansion, but a deeper or wider hollowpoint would promote violent expansion and shedding of the petals, hollowpoint.

It is just another option for balancing the alloy, velocity and boolit design to get the desired expansion. Nothing magic about it. Just another step between a WFN and a deep hollowpoint.

I use cup points to ensure low velocity expansion of soft alloys, while maintaining retained bullet weight, by avoiding fragmentation. The British Webley Mk III Manstopper bullet is the perfect example, 1:12 tin-lead, at 600 fps.
