Anyone Else Like Unmodified Ruger 10/22s?

I'm wanting a Ruger 10/22 carbine. I've had several in the past but traded them off. For whatever reason, I like the older stock ones. I like non extended mag releases, regular charging handles and factory contour barrels. Not to mention I like the factory stock shape and feel. They just look good and feel right to me. The balance is great. I do like the addition of sling swivels or studs.

I know there's a lot of folks that love the 10/22 in it's modified super accurate forms, but I know I'm not the only one that likes it stock, am I?

About the only mod I see a need for is the extractor, if it's having extraction issues.

have several of the stock ones but would really love a takedown, does that count as a stock one. at least the mags for them have gotten to where you dont have to sell your first born to buy some extra ones.

I like the old ones with aluminium buttplate and walnut. The International and Sporter were very nice.

Yes. I have one from the late 60's or 70's I believe. ( I do not recall for sure & would have to check. Might be early 80's, but I doubt it...) It is stock & will stay that way until it is no longer mine. I do have one of the 25 round mags for it that I bought when the gooberment kept threatening magazine bans, but I have not used it & it is still in the original package it came it.

If that is consider a "mod" or an alteration" then I would say that I have the means to do so, but do not intend to do so.



Of course, those that do like to do such things is just fine with me, Suit yourselves, but I prefer not to do it to mine in this case.

The older 10/22s are fun to shoot and I do enjoy them, but in the old ones I like the porters better than the carbines. (Just personal preference.) But when you want to get serious shooting one, it does need some work on the trigger. The early ones had a fairly decent trigger, but even they can have the action smoothed out, trigger travel removed, and trigger lightened by someone who knows what they are doing.

What's the normal price range for an older rough condition 10/22? I'm looking at a couple for sale around $100.

I am unable to join the ranks of those who like unmodified 10/22 rifles , I've had surplus rifles with better triggers than this one had . I can agree that the Sporter model does feel nice though .

I always liked the original ones. Wife bought me one for birthday back in the 80's and i am ashamed to say it has never been fired. Might have to get it out and have a little fun this week.

My 10/22 has a checkered Walnut stock with sling swivel studs.
That's why I paid $5 more for it then the Birch stocked gun with the front bbl band.
I added a Blk RUGER butt pad & a Williams peep sight.

Otherwise I haven't done anything to it. I bought 2 extra 10rd factory mags. I carried them in a speedloader pouch on my belt. The sling & swivels came from my new Remington 700BDL.
More then 150 bricks later it still shoots better then me.

It's 45yrs old now.

Had to change the hammer on mine ,the trigger was over 7 lbs ,power custom hammer brought that to 2.5 lbs nylon buffer to keep the noise down as I use a moderator otherwise standard .fun bunny buster half inch at 25 yards with the right ammo.

I don’t mind them stock but I have to fix the factory trigger with a Volquartsen hammer or preferably a Kidd trigger group. I will admit I am a Kidd trigger fanboy.

We loved them over here as well, until our socialist government under the guise of public safety had them melted down and the steel sent to the USA for you guys to make us some less dangerous firearms, and thus grabbing more tax. I wonder do I sound cynical enough towards my soon to be unelected Government. Regards Stephen

My ruger 10/22 ran stock for decades.

Then I happened to stumble upon a youtube video where they were showing off Mods.

Within a month I had an extended mag release, I had "fixed" the bolt hold open. So you did not have to go hunting with your finger for that little lever. Just jerk the bolt back and release. And I added a noise reducing rear action pin that the bolt slams into when fired.

So she is now quieter, easier to swap mags and get back into action.
Stock is ok, tweaked to fit my desires is even better.

A 10/22 is on my bucket list. A plane jane with the wood stock. Just waiting for one to come on sale again for under 200.00. When i have the extra 200 on hand. Seams to always come on sale when i don't. Now i have started a 10/22 fund that is stashed in my one of my hand gun safes.

Of the two 10/22s that I remember having, the last one being about 5 years ago, I recall the trigger being pretty decent. When I think of stock it's more to the looks than the guts. I don't care for the extended mag latch. Beside being ugly, it's in a bad spot for the balance when carrying and is too easy to accidentally engage unless you got a banana mag installed.

Those banana mags are fun once in a while.
