    Need Mixing Proportions

I have a 6-pound soft lead billet that I want to blend with linotype to end up with a hardness of about 10-12. What weight of lino should I add?

I don't know the hardness of the lino, but it is 60 years old, for what that might be worth.

This is not a scientific operation whereby a rocketship will fail to land on the Moon if I don't have an answer good to the fifth decimal place.

    Just need an approximation.

    Thanks. PBSmith

Mixing a lb of pure Pb with a lb Lino will get you to 16-17 BHN. You'll be at hardball which is 94-6-2.

Add that with an equal amount of pure Pb and you'll be at 10-12 BHN. About the same as COWW which is 96-3-1 or there abouts.

So to answer your original question, mix your 6 lbs of Pb with 2 lbs of Lino.

"soft " lead and linotype have several different hardnesses.

I would first test the hardness of each

then you can do the math
    1 pound of 5 bhn + 1 pound of 19 BHN = 2 pounds of (19+5= 24/2) 12 BHN

    1 pound pure, .5 lino

Tin % Antimony % Arsenic % Copper % Silver % Lead % Weight Est. Hardness
    1.33% 4.00% 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% 94.7% 1.5 12.7
