Even though this is named "GI", which implies a 5" Government length barrel, this gun actually has a 4.25" barrel, which is Commander length, correct?

yes Compact Commander Size (4.25") as listed in the ad

No sure why they stamped GI on the side as its the Commander size and has the extended beavertail but that's whats on it

These are quality "MilSpec" 1911's, good steel. good basic weapon. All I did to mine was fit a full length guide rod to it.

Add a .22 conversion kit, and you're good to go. I would buy this one, but I already have a 5" tactical model.

yes its a full size grip.. Just laid a std set of 1911 grip panels and the bolt holes match
