I have always admired Tds and that one is one to drool over for sure!

That is a beautiful rifle. It looks like the hammer was changed out - Is the rest of the lock original?

The lock is a Davis Hawken type. The nose of the hammer is extended to reach the firing pin. Extending the striker tit was another option. Some Gemmer TD builders have used a Springfield lock that complicates the use of double set triggers since it doesn't have a fly. Most TD locks have a 3 click tumbler which may be even more of a problem, although I can't say I ever looked into it.

Were original Gemmers made with different locks or with the originals? I guess I don't know much about Gemmers, but I thought they were usually build around the original lock and hammer.

I have often thought about making one as hunting rifle.

Here's mine. I built this around 1983 on an original 1870 Springfield action and hammer, with a repro 1864 Springfield lock, in .50-70 Govt. Barrel rifled (7-groove LH twist) and chambered by Rich Hoch, of custom bullet mold fame. Full curly maple stock, nitric acid/iron filings stain with heat applied. Then many hand-rubbed coats of oil finish. Iron hardware, L&R triggers and guard. Shoots like a champ.
