My New 1892 Review and Range Day

So picked up my brand new Winchester 1892 in .45 Colt yesterday
    It was slathered in Cosmo.

    First the Pro's:
This rifle is super nice, the bluing is deep and smooth.
The wood does not have much figure but is very nice, with a good finish.
Metal to wood fit is excellent with the exception of the tang area, wood is a bit proud but not bad.
Action is very smooth and the bore is super shiny and super smooth, actually the best looking bore I have ever seen.

    The Con's:
Trigger pull is a HEAVY, feels like #8, how ever it is crisp, no creep.
I don't like the rebounding hammer, but the safety does not bother me.
Rear sight could be better, not easy to get a clear picture.

    Things that need to change:
I need to get the trigger below #3
    Need a better rear sight
    Any Idea's?

So on to the Range trip
    Started at 25yds.
First off was my revolver loads:
SNS 200gr. RNFP poly coated, sized .452, non G/C
    7.0gr. HP-38
    OAL: 1.580
No groups, more of a shotgun pattern, about 4"
    Next was:
Bayou bulets 250gr. RNFP poly coated, non G/C
    7.0gr. HP-38
    OAL: 1.580
    Still no joy, 3.310"

    And we have a winner!
    Again this is 25yds.
Last load was new a one with a bullet I have never tried:
GT 255gr. HP, non G/C flat base sized .453 lubed and then lubed with Lee Alox.
    6.6gr. HP-38
    OAL: 1.653

    First Group:
    3 shots in the bull @ .43
The other 5 shots are the 250gr. Bayou bullets

I then put up a new target and proceeded to put 3 shots in the same hole

    Then out to 50yds.

    This is .92

Needless to say I am happier than a Tornado in a trailer park
I will shooting this in the local Cast Matches each month.

................Looks like a very attractive rifle to me. While the walnut doesn't have much 'Figure' it has a very nice grain structure. The only thing wrong with the stock (and it's only MY taste) is that I tend to like it a bit redder Don't mean much as some like black plastic! Shouldn't be much problem in replacing the rear sight I'd think, not too expensive to do either. Looks like you're a lucky man and your new rifle enjoys cast lead with lube in the grooves like God intended!

Nice looking rifle. I have an older '94 in 45 colt. Love it.

Really great shooting. You've got a "keeper".

I am using .456” diameter bullets in mine with very good accuracy, a fatter bullet that fits the throat will bring smiles.

I really like the new Winchester 1892's. I've heard that the .45 Colts like a pretty fat bullet. Sorry to hear about the heavy trigger. Mine comes in at around 5 lbs.

Thanks guys, Really love this rifle.
It will probably never see Jacketed ammo.

I would actually like it a bit darker brown.

Just checked, mine is at 5.25, but feels much heavier.
I need to get it under #3 if possible.

I may try some at .454, but that is about the biggest I can find, I quit cast awhile back.

I bought my Win/Miroku for work, we have a Grizzly bear problem in the area I work. 58 Grizzly's counted last summer on one mountain. I wanted a SRC in 45 Colt to shoot fairly hot 300 gr. g/c bullets @ 1100 fps. 18 grs. of IMR 4227.This rifle handles and shoots very well, that is the only load I developed for this rifle. I did try the RCBS 270 gr. @ .454" with marginal accuracy, I suspect softer alloy than Lyman #2 would help to slug up and get better accuracy.

For not seeing the sights too well, I'd say you did pretty good - CONGRATS !

So I could use the issue front sight blade, I D/T'd a single 6-48 in the top/rear portion of each receiver sidewall for a Williams 94-5D-SE receiver sight intended for an Angle Eject Winchester 94.

That sight carries the aperture bar behind, instead of atop, the base - allowing the aperture to be lowered down to the top of the bolt.
