    Hull vise

Just thought I'd share. Made this recently, a hull vise and a shell holder to put them in. My friend in the hat...that's Hondo.

    Fancy, love the leatherwork.

I passed up a hull vice at a garage sale for 25¢ before I knew what they were

    20 ga.
Forstner bits, 5/8 and 3/4. Lined the holes with swede leather.

Don't know about 12 ga, but left room if I need it on the vise.

Nice work! Tool & leather, and the dog in the hat is pretty cool too!

Mine is just a simple one, not as fancy or good looking. Just a piece of wood with a notch cut into it, and a hole in the end for pinching the hull. I should make a nicer one like your sometime.

BTW, I did not see it mentioned, but anyone is going to do this as well, keep in mind to use the larger bit for the rim, before the smaller one goes all the way thru the board, or some issues might result no matter if ya use a Forstner or a spade/flat bit.
If ya don't know what I am talking about, you will see, once you try using the smaller one first, instead of the larger one for this type of design. But, you will not be very happy about doing it smaller, then larger, I would bet... LOL

It is also easier to use the drill bits before splitting the piece, if you are not very good at doing these sort of DIY projects. Otherwise you will have to clamp the two paces together & that is just a little more work that is not necessary if you drill first. YMMV, of course.

Mine is a little more simple. It is just a piece of 1/2' Aluminum Plate with a hole in it. The Fit on a sized rim is real close so if the holder is cocked even a little it will lock the hull in place.

Still want to make a wood one.

Now i like that i need to make one as my roll crimper just came. I believe the wood one is for me just because i already have everything. The aluminum one looks nice to i just don't have a piece of metal around to make it.

Good point JB, using the larger bit first keeps the smaller bit centered since it gives you a center to work with.

My homemade hull clamp worked but was pretty cumbersome, not as nice by far as Taylor's. I'd tired of using channel locks and bought one of the BPI clamps. I'm happy with it and it works well. Just not the nice personal touch like shown in the OP. Gp

Nice job on the hull vise. Any plans to drill it for use as a cribbage board also?
