    256 Win Mag in Contender

So as some of you know by my wanted to buys lately. I recently had a Thompson barrel follow me home and I thought I would share some photos. I was told that the seller worked in the custom shop back in the day and this jem is un fired. At least for now but I am having a bit hard time with the thought of pushing the first one down range.

I'd go for it. My dad has the same one along with 22 other calibers. They are a lot of fun to shoot. Fun to sit for an afternoon and shoot some steel with them. 256 is fun a little bigger bang but very mild recoil. Shoots pretty decent at 100yds. Take it and shoot it. More fun than looking at it.

Interesting barrel, never saw a factory engraved one. I like the 256, have a 10 inch bull and a 24 inch bull barrel. Working up some cast loads been on my list awhile, wife( and life) keeps adding things above it! Mine shot 75 gr jackets pretty well, even took it deer hunting a couple times. Now I have an 80 gr NOE Rd mold to work with, starlings beware!

Oh, yeah, SHOOT IT, thats why they made them

If it's got the same twist as mine, the only bullet it will shoot is a 75 gr. Anything longer tumbles.

I'm one of the enablers here. I own a few Hawkeyes and a T/C bbl myself. Mine is a factory one.
    Shoot the darn thing.
It's not going to hurt the value at all, and the fun you will have,, will make you smile. Besides,, the groundhogs are out now,, so you need to get ready for them!

Been talking with Contender1 and his recommendation is the Hornady 60 gran FP so I bought some to try. I'm sure we'll get something to work. Thank for the heads up on the longer ones.

    Shoot it !!!

I had a 10" standard barrel in 256 Win Mag ... but no front sight ( set up for a scope ), it was from a limited run of 250 or 500
Mine shot a lot better than I could shoot
Sad to say , I needed cash and I got a offer that I am now sorry I said Yes to

I think you need to get one of those 25th anniversary frames to mount it on. Lol.
And then take it to the range and let everyone drool over it.
I picked up a 12" bullberry barrel in 256 win over the winter. Only shot 75gr V-maxs in it so far but it may replace me 22 hornet as my go to 100 - 150 yard ground hog buster.

I also made the mistake of selling my 256 barrel. When it showed back up in the gunshop that winter, I grabbed it up! Glad I held on to the dies. The offbeat calibers are one of the things that make Contenders COOL!

I suppose you could add me to the list of enablers.
This is from a 21in T/C Custom Shop barrel. The 4198 loads are super accurate but didn't have the velocity I wanted. These are 75gr j-words @ 100yds. I took a mature doe with it last year but don't tell anyone, we all know that would be impossible. They will also do nasty things to raccoons.
We also know that cases cannot be formed from nickle plated brass. I guess that cat's out of the bag.
