Question Bullet Mold for Rolling Block 12.7 x 44r

Hi, Does anyone know if the RCBS bullet from Bullet mold 50-340 SWC 50 Action Express (500 diameter) 340 grain a semi wad cutter will work in a Danish Rolling Block 12.7 x 44r . I'm guessing it could be sized down as needed. I don't have the gun yet, so I can't slug the bore. Also any feed back as to which brass works well in this gun. Thanks to all. Bob

First of the Danish RB is more akin to a 45-60 and uses Lee 405-459-HB bullets just fine.
Next the Swedish/Norwegian RB is the 12,7x44R you talk about and no the .500" bullet will be to small and cause gas blow by.
The way the rifling was cut they really need a .515" bullet.
For many years i used the Lee 515-450 as is, with fine results. As i get older and recoil gets worse i cut the bottom band of and it now casts a fine 380grain bullet.

I had 2 of the 12.7x44 rolling blocks. 1 is now a 40-65 WCF. That one shot and chambered the lee 450 gr well with the brass trimmed to 44mm.
The one I still have needs the same boolit sized to .510 and the brass trimmed to 42mm. I started with the standard plinking load of 12.5 gr of unique. Never saw any reason to experiment further. Very accurate, pleasant to shoot and did a very good job on the 8 pt buck I took with it this last season.

My brother has one that needs .515 boolits with the brass trimmed to 42mm.
These guns have very tight throats compared to the bore. With the brass trimmed to fit the chamber a boolit that fits the bore probably won’t load in the gun.
I just loaded a dummy round and stuck it in the chamber. Measured what it needed to be trimmed and did so. These guns are all individuals.

I use 50 Alaskan brass, sized on 50-70 dies and trimmed to fit. Works pretty well.

I'm shooting a Lyman Great Plains style bullet that I shoot in my Remington muzzle loader. Soft lead .500 diameter patched to .508 loaded ahead of 28 grains of H-4198 it shoots as good as I can hold.

A very interesting cartridge and one of my favourites. I make my cases from 348 Winchester brass or 400/450 Nitro express trimmed to length and expanded to hold a Lyman 450515 boolit. The bore on my rifle is absolutely pristine and without and flaws. Typical of these rolling blocks the bore measures 0.492/0.508", yes that is 0.008 deep rifling!

My favourite load and most accurate is 62gns Swiss No.2 with an unsized Lyman bullet!

Hold Still Varmint; while I plugs Yer!

Excellent advice in this thread. Pay attention to the fellow who said these rifles are individuals.... They sure are!

    12,7x44R Swedish rolling block
    30" barrel sporter

    Chronographed with 1867 Remington sporter
using Doudna 450 grain FN bullets .515".
    All are excellent loads.
Blackpowder loads uses vegetable wad card
on top of powder (Buffalo Arms).
    Cases - reformed .348 Winchester
Standard primer for Unique & XMP5744
    Magnum primer for blackpowder

    12.5 grs. Unique = 1074 FPS average
    very accurate load

    24 grs. XMP5744 = 1089 FPS average
    26 grs. XMP5744 = 1151 FPS average
27 grs. XMP5744 = 1211 FPS average Do not exceed
    70 grs. FFg = 1214 FPS average

    350gr FN (Doudna) .515"
29 grs XMP5744 = 1337 fps average Do not exceed
    44.44 extreme spread
    18.02 std deviation

With all the loads listed above the fired case looked "good" with no signs of obturation
and primer cup was rounded. Load data could be jacked up but I saw no good reason at the time.

The "first" 30000 rifles made in Sweden was done with most fittings from M1860 Vredes rifles (Brass fittings and slender stock).
The frontstuffers used 90 grains of BP and a Minié bullet.
The way deep rifling was done to accommodate ample fouling without hindering loading.

The Swedes with "normal" rifling can be made to shoot very very good!
The Swedish BP shooters frown upon the old Vredes barreld actions for serious competition.
