    Parker Hale 1200

Hi guys, I was looking at a Parker Hale for a low price, barrel is so so but action seems okay!

Does anyone know much about these, specifically durability and reliability of the action/bolt and also the likelihood of them being accurate rifles with a good barrel on?

    Thanks

Commercial 98 Mauser. IMHO you can't get much better than that!

    So a real solid action!

    Not too hard to rebarrel?

Even easier to have Jes rebore it if you want a thumper(.35+ cal.) Parker Hales are nice Mausers made by Santa Barbara in Spain and finished in England IIRC.

Had an 06 that I got for cheap as a cast shooter and was doin real well until
I got the call - dad do you have a rifle I could use for elk??
Now it lives in Nevada should've kept it and bought him one of those
    cookie cutter new rifles.
I'd jump on another in a heart beat.

They are very well made rifles.

The 1200 has a hinged floor plate and the 1200C has a detachable magazine.
All have adjustable triggers, and available in many different calibers.

    Parker-Hale also made a 1200V, .22-.250, .25-06, 6mm Rem, & .243 Win. And a "African Magnum" model in .375 H&H, .404 Mag and .458 Win Mag.

Replacing the barrel is easy, stand M98 thread. And, barrels are readily available, pre chambered in a wide range of calibers.

I've owned a few (7mm Rem Mag, .308 Norma & .300 Win Mag) and would not hesitate in buying another, should one pop up.

If you are wanting a Model 98, go for it. The ones I have seen at the range in older days were very well made and the ones I did see were good shooters. Really nice Model 98's are going to be hard to find in the future since the modern plastic craze has taken hold. The days of steel and wood are fast passing and cost cutting is the order of the day. james

Back in the 8090s the Santa Barbara Mauser was offered as a kit rifle- barreled action in the white and unfinished stock. I put one up for my sister in law(7×57) and it was very nice and accurate. Gorgeous striped walnut. The kit was $200. Memories.

    1. Buy it
    2. Send to JES
    3. Have him make it a 9.3x62
    4. Kill anything

And yes, Virginia the slightly larger case rim will feed just fine.

My first Hi power rifle was a Parker Hale 1200 in 300 Win Mag.Its a semi pretty Mod 98 Mauser that produced antiquate accuracy for a hunting rifle.

Yep. Missed that. Easy to rebarrel if it needs it. I've had less than pristine barrels that shot great.

PH used 98 mauser actions and SMLE ,and N04 actions in thier rifles , then bought out a redesigned 98 action for later models . either way you cant go wrong .

There was also some lend lease o2a3 actions from England, that Parker Hale re barreled and put in sporter stocks, with their names also, I had one in .243. I recently bought a 98 commercial action 30/06 and the guy told me it had some pits in front of the chamber in the bore, when I got it, it was copper fouling lifting up. I scrubbed and wiped and used every type of copper fouling remover I had, until it came out nice and shiny. I zeroed it at 100 yds and promptly shot 2, 3 shot groups that were dime sized with factory ammo! Don't give up on the bore just yet, but if it does not work out, it is easily re-barreled cheaply!

They also used both the P14 and 1917 actions as the heart of their economy sporters. One thing is I never found out how they plugged up the oblong recess in the rear receiver ring on those actions. From pics what you'll see is a blued disc with the PH logo stamped on it and no gap what so ever around the edges. When I had the Winchester 1917 reworked I made up a dutchman from key stock. The slug or dutchman was filed until it just slid into the recess and the gunsmith tig welded it in place. Really got lucky contouring the rear ring as the smith said he didn't have all that much metal removal to do. Came with a Johnson automatics 4 groove barrel cut to 22". Had it D&T for scope, bead blasted and then blued. Wiped it down with a rag saturated with CLP and let it soak for about a week. First few passes came out almost black. I guess from the bluing. Now it's a beautiful really blue/black. Frank

Back in the 1980's, I had a Fine one in .300WinMag.
Unfortunately it went into the Cowboy Action Fund.
It cost's a lot to outfit a Wife and Two Kids.

Happiness is a Warm GUN & more ammo to shoot in it.

had one back in the late 70s. It was there fancy grade that looked like a weatherby. It was a 243 and its shot lights out! Moa with about anything put in it. I just didn't have much use for a heavy long action 243.
