    Barrel twist question

Can a barrel have too fast a twist for PP? Trying for 2700fps from 30-06 with 170-190 grain bullet.

Over RPMing the bullet. Yes, all cast bulllets will be affected by that. You can swage your own bullets and get around it sort of.

I believe the NRA and Col. Harrison did some testing with factory rifles in 30 cal up to and including 300 min mag with full power paper patched bullets in the 60s. Done right and set up the lead bullet never touches the barrel only the paper. Its been a long time since reading but If memory serves it was hunting weight bullets mostly. You might contact NRA Archives for a reprint of this.

I have got pretty close to that with a 1/10 twist in a 30-06, with very good accuracy. It takes some work to get there, I recommend that you study this thread.

Thanks I have read this several times. Been looking at Palma barrels in 13 twist but most have .299 or less bore? Just thinking fast twist and cast bullets may not be a great combination.

That is normally a very true statement, but not with PP. Slower twist can get you to higher velocities with naked boolits.

Quite true. However I notice it is much easier to get good accuracy with the slower twist barrels at full power. It certainly can be done in a standard barrel but is picky. I really like my 1:14 30-06 and 1:15 338-06. They shoot great with just about anything I feed them.
