A little research has indicated that there were several patents ruled infringed on by the 1903 Springfield. These are the extractor and collar, the staggered magazine, the stripper clips and the safety, all patented on the 1893 Mauser. The bolt sleeve locking device was patented in 1897 and was definitely a '98 Mauser feature and that was the only '98 Mauser feature ever used on the 1903 Springfield. All other features were from earlier Mauser rifles.
