So tell me about the 9.3x57 in a Mauser action, the pro's and cons?

I have been perusing the internet, a dangerous thing for me when I have some spending cash. After reading posts on this site and others, I am thinking of getting a 9.3x57. Brass is readily available, and it seems to shoot cast boollits very well. Can anyone enlighten me about shooting jacketed bullets, are they .35 caliber, and what the point blank range is for sighting in and hunting. All replies appreciated!

.366 diameter, I shoot open sights which limits me to about 100 yards. I think it's a short range proposition so I've never pushed it.

It’s similar to the 358 Win and should feed slick in most Mausers as it’s parent case is the 7mm and 8mm. It’s big brother is the 9.3x62, which is more powerful and easier to find factory ammo and brass. I’ve got one that was made for me on a Turk Mauser. Both are great cast boolit guns.

The .366 number isn't exactly engraved in stone. Mine is on a pre war FN 98 action and was made in 1928. land to land is about .356 groove to groove is .368 and the throat is .370. Frank

Fine cartridge (as are all the metric Mausers). As a cast boolit gun, probably a bit better than 9.3x62/64/74 as smaller case capacity.

    NOE makes a great mold.

Good, fun, easy to make shoot cartridge. The only con I can think of is if you're looking at the Husky's, you will probably have to thin your case necks. I hope I don't get this backward but, they usually have slightly large groove diameters and tight throats.

It has become one of my favorite calibers based on the 8 X 57 case. I shoot an Accurate Mold bullet that is very similar to the one Sven shows but I don't powder coat.

Great cartridge! I had a Husky 46 chambered for it and found it to be death and destruction on the local hog population. Very similar to the 358 Win. both of which are vastly underrated in todays "tactical" environment.

I built a 9.3x62 Mauser on a 98Mauser action it shoots a Accurate 37-285C very well sized .368 over H4895 , Brass is easy to get PPU, Hornady and Nosler. as is factory ammo, j-words are made by most bullet makers, I shoot mostly cast boolits , I had no reason to go with the 9.3x 57 My 9.3x62 will probably never hunt with it I have a .375 H&H Mag. and .458 Win. Mag. to go to Africa for my to was two friend that got board with a machine shop and said lets build us each one of those, because I don't shoot mine with full house loads very often I would think the 9.3x57 would serve me as well but I had neve heard of it when I built my rifle.

i have two husqvarna m46 in 9.3x57. one is an original(meaning open sights, made in 1942) and the other is scoped(made in 1936). i use the scope version with a 280gr fn gc(.368") and imr 4895. i have to chrony it but i think its going 1800 - 1900+/-fps. the brass is 8x57 prvi sized up to 9.3mm. the swedes say its is a great cartridge for moose. since i'm only hunting deer/black bear out to 200 yards, i don't have an issue with it. i could say that the 9.3x57 can kill elk and grizzly out to 250 yards(j-word bullets) but........

go to simpsons(if you haven't already), they have the best deals around.

My tax return is how I ended up with a .416 Ruger. This site doesn't help much. I've been interested in the various 9.3 calibers since I bought a Mauser I intended to rebarrell. I'm hoping this thread will help me make a decision although I am leaning towards the 9.3x62 or 64

the 9.3x 62mm would be the easy way out, and easy fit in any action of the 30-06 family, and yes this is not the best group to be in if you ask my wife , they al ways giving me the idea that I want one of those. don't tell her that a 22-250 AI is in the works now.

    .

The only minus/negative for a 9.3x57 IMO is that there's zero chance of finding ammo for it afield when/if the need should arise.
