    30-45 Caliber Tool

Thanks to two fellow collectors for convincing me that I needed this tool in the ARTCA collection.
An Ideal No. 10 tool made during Marlin's brief ownership of the Ideal Company from 1910 to 1916, it is a rare find in this condition and in an unusual caliber.

This tool is unusual in that is is all here, only the priming hook was missing but I have a spare to complete the set. The instructions along with an additional sales flyer are included.

There are even two expanding plugs, .308 and .310.
But what really sets it apart is the 30-45 caliber. Based on the older way of naming cartridges it is 30 caliber, 45 grains of powder, ie: 45-70 or 38-55. Officially it is the .30 Caliber U.S Military cartridge, 1903. Or, 30-03 that was redesigned and shortend then standardized as the U.S. 30 Caliber 1906 cartridge or as we know it the 30-06 in 1906.

Wow, Ken, that’s quite a find. All the bits&pieces still there, too!

I’d never seen a Marlin/Ideal box label that neutral color before. The ones I’ve seen are green or bluish-green, if memory serves.

Does the charge cup have any markings on the handle, or the bottom? I still load with my 30 US tool, great fun!

My "Holy Grail" of Ideal tools! I hope some day to pair just such a tool set with my 1895 Winchester that's caliber marked ".30 Gov't 03". I was lucky a couple of years ago and got my hands on an Ideal shell resizer marked ".30-45", but the loading tool itself has remained elusive. Very cool, and thanks for sharing!

I'd also be interested to know what markings are on the charge cup handle, as well as any markings on the dies themselves.

And I am curious, what should one expect to pay for something like that??

Well, years ago I foolishly put a similar set in .303 Savage on Ebay and it was gone at $165. I was thrilled at the time, but now realize I made a bad mistake, especially since it was in beautiful condition and had all the tools including the nickel plated charge cup.

An 03 collector with an unmodified 30-03 would kill for that tool !

On eBay this set would easily go over the $300.00 mark.

I don't know about charge cup markings, I just didn't look. Now it's in the frozen northland and I am in chilly and wet Texas.
