Not surprising, the great diversity of answers and solutions.

The 45-70 is my all time most used cartridge and is maybe one of the most adaptable cast bullet round as to both bullet and powder.
Tho it is a little large, it is also my choice as a do all survival rifle here in the Rocky Mountains. Useful ammo can be made using almost any powder and lead you can find.

I'll second the Lyman 457122 - it is my most used 45-70 mold even though it is a single cavity.

I have a cool NOE mold. It is a 405 grain mold that has pins in it that allow you to make hollow point, cup point or flat nose boolits.

This is a few of 'em. These chrono right around 1800 fps.

I don't know how you guys can shoot 40 .405's at 1600-1800 fps in a silhouette match. I'd be good for 2 or 3!

My goto load for my 1895 CB is the RCBS .45-300 FNGC which drops at about 325 from my mould. 33 gr of 5744 for about 1550 fps.

This yields a trajectory when sighted at dead on at 150 yards that is flat enough for no correction at 50 and 100 yards. to +6 MOA at 200 so there is only one sight correction for the entire match. I can shoot 40 of these in one sitting and not feel bad about it later.

This load is also sufficient for any game animal in the lower 48. I see no need to go bigger as the only result will be more recoil from an already light gun and mine weighs 8 lbs due to the added Graycoil Recoil Reducer I installed in the stock. My 1895 CB weighed less than my 1894 CB in .44 Magnum! 7 lbs 1 oz. vs 7 lbs 6 oz.

If it was 9 lbs like an 1886 I could see the heavier boolits for hunting, but not for target shooting it is pointless to beat yourself up shooting targets.

Always get a kick out of the guys who come here and want data to shoot 400 gr + boolits at 2000 fps. Kind of a waste when you're only going to shoot one, and that is usually the general consensus of replies to the question.
