    38-55 and 4198

I sighted in my Win/Jes 38-55 in the cool wind today. My eyes were watering and a clear sight picture was elusive but I'm pleased. 22.8 grs IMR 4198/ Lee 379255 sized .377".
I love these Redfield sights- who needs a screwdriver?

Lookin good. I've yet to go above 21 gr of 4198, I use 3031 for the next heavier load. I'm getting 1400 fps with the 21 gr load using a 250 gr plain based bullet and a tuft of dacron.

Ole 270- I've used 3031 as well for the same boolit. What is your barrel length? I'd like to have a lower front sight so I could adjust the rear sight slide all the way down for close range but the ramp complicates that. But it's sighted in and by the back door in case Mr or Mrs Pig show up sticking their noses in my hayfield. Root, root, Boom!

Mine is a 20" Marlin 336. I've got a Skinner on mine, pretty simple and rugged, but not much on fine adjustments.

    My Ballard Pacific likes 21.0 grains of IMR4198 with a 255 grain .377" boolit ... 100 yards ...

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't reached my "Expiry" date!

(And that "stray" up at 10:00 was a pulled shot from the adjoining target that was mounted to the left of this target shooting with my old Winchester '94 SRC in .38-55 ...)

I have a Marlin 336 30-30 that I have thought about sending to Jes for 38/55 rebore, or a 35/30. But I hate to do this with a very nice rifle, with great bore and is a shooter. I know where there is one that needs blued, but has a good bore for cheap, and since I do hot bluing, I am considering going that route. Dang good shooting on all accounts anyway. Don't you love it when a gun/load shoots good right from the get go.

I shot some more of them today. I also tried the max load but all I gained was recoil. It still groups good and the half mag makes it even lighter. I'll probably convert it back eventually but I like it for now.
