    looking for barrel

I am looking for a barrel to fit on a P-17 eddystone in 458. want to build a 458x2 American. So I am looking for leads as to where I can get a barrel that will not rip my billfold apart. I'm cheap.

I've used ER Shaw barrels with satisfaction for several custom rifles, including a P14 Eddystone in .450 Marlin. As far as I know, no one makes a pre threaded short chambered barrel for the P14/ US1917. Shaw can do the action work needed as well. Your billfold will get over it eventually if it's something you want. That .450 would put three bullets inside an inch at 100 yds.

That is not a good action for cheap barrels. The square threads are more expensive to machine. Also, it is a very large action for a shortened cartridge. A better choice would be a 98 Mauser, Savage, or Remington 700 because of the many barrel choices available.

that is the only action avail for use, not chopping any of my original 98 mausers and wouldn't own a savage or rem 700. ER Shaw would hardly talk to me and would not give me a price over the phone.

Try Green Mountain barrels. Don't know if they thread and/or install.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's been ten years(wow!) since I last dealt with them and they were great in every instance. I had them install barrels on two Mausers, a Sako, and the P14 and they were courteous and professional on the phone in all instances. If I remember correctly it was about $180 for the barrel and another $80 for the fitting. No doubt it's higher now. I'll call them tomorrow and see how they treat me.

Glad to hear you are able to find a barrel. Another option is to send the existing barrel out for re-boring to somebody like JES. This way you already have the barrel threaded and sights on....

I'm glad you found one. I called Shaw this morning. A threaded short chambered chrome-moly .458x2" for the 1917 is $215 and they no longer do fitting. Please keep us posted on your project!

Did you have to do a relief cut to yank the barrel?
