    Use for A1680?

After selling off Blackout and Maxi rifles I have a orphan bottle of A1680.

Anyone use this for Military Rifle Boolits, 44 mag, or 38 special?

Used for the Blackout, Hornet, my .218mashburn bee and the plain bee, not so good for reduced load, it is a ball powder.

It was originally designed for use in the 7.62x39mm and it works great in that ...
I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't reached my "Expiry" date!

I use it in my 310 Cadet loads.

There is no problem so great, that it cannot be solved by the proper application of high explosives.

Any of the small rifle rounds or larger handgun rounds. I use it in 25/20, 32/20, 256W, 22H and22KH

it will get it done in a pinch in 222s and 223s too. there was even one poster here I respected that had good luck with it (with slightly reduced velocity) in the 44 mag using cast bullets. Don't recall his loads but it was basically as much as would fit in a case and still allow a bullet to be seated.

That seem like the closest fit. What could be the problem with trying a full case with cast in 44 mag?

It works with a case full in the 44mag but doesn't give as high a vel as faster powders. I tried it with 312gr cast and a case full but only got a little over 1100fps in a 7 1/2" ruger.

Do you recall how many grains you had in this loading?

For most straight wall rounds, "case full" of 1680 really does mean as much as you can get in the case and still seat the bullet. It too slow for max speeds, but pressures will be on the low side unless you really compressed it hard.

Sorry, I don't recall and didn't record it either. All I can remember is that I filled the case to where the powder would be compressed a bit, chronographed a few and gave it up as too slow. I did load some in a Rossi 92 in 454 Casull with a 300gr Sierra jacketed bullet. 33gr gave 1600fps. 30grs of Lil gun with a 317gr cast gives 1970 fps in the 454 so I gave up on 1680 as too slow for both the 44mag and the 454. It works really well in the 22H and the 25/20 and the book shows it works well in the 7.62x39, 300blackout and the 30 carbine. I have had fair results with cast in a 223 and 1680 as well

It simply excels in 32H&R Mag and 32-20 Contenders.

how about 3030? I have four pounds of it and 500 125 gr soft point bullets I was thinking about loading for my bolt action 3030. haven't found any load data yet but have found for 7.62x39 with a 125gr bullet. not looking for max velocities I have 3031, 4064, 4895, and blc2 for that. just trying to find a fit for this powder in something I load.

    Scooby,

The 1680 burn rate looks pretty good for a 125 in a 30-30.

Mfg max load data for 1680 under a 125 is bullet is 21.5 gr @ 39k psi for the 300 BO.

Mfg max load data for 1680 under a 125 is bullet is 27 gr @ 45k psi for the 7.62x39.

I do not know what you consider your pressure limit for your bolt gun.

So, you can call Western, get someone to run quickload, or just start low and work your way up.

My bet is that you can probably get pretty close to the charge specified for the 7.62x39 (again depending on you target pressure).

My plan was to use the 7.62x39 starting data, I just wanted to run it past some others first. I wasn't sure if this powder likes to have a full case or if using the x39 loads in the 3030 would be fine. It is a savage 842, would I need a magnum primer to light this powder efficiently? If anyone has quickload and could run the numbers for me that would be great.

Edit 1:Also just called western powder, the fellow I spoke to wasn't coming up with any data for it in 3030. he did take my contact info and was going to talk to some of the other staff members and get back to me. I will post what he comes up with.

Edit 2: Western powder just got back to me he said at an 80% case fill starting load for 3030 the pressure is already over max. he did give me some data for 222 so i can use it up in that. He was the nicest guy and got back to me really quickly.

I bought out an old gun shop and he had 5 1lb. cans of Win. 680 for $5 a can. This was right after my son got a Yugoslav SKS for $150. It was originally intended for the 7.62/39 round and with Lee’s 160 TL bullet, this gun shoots 1 1/2” 3 shot groups at 100 yards! The only data I could find in the older 1970s Winchester powder manuals was for 22 hornet and 30 carbine. Winchester was probably loading the round for the military then and not offered to the public. AA1680 is a replacement for Win 680.

You can use it up in 44 mag. for a reduced load.

Really nice service from the supplier. Getting a reason for "not recommended" makes all the difference.

It seems like the response from other suppliers is frequently along the lines of a simple "we have not tested that combination so we can not say anything".

Since it is a case of "too much capacity", it does sound like it might be about right for a 30 Herrett (I have a couple) or similar round.
