    Winchester trapper 357magnum carrier jam

I've got a problem with my trapper. Every so often a shell will get under the carrier and tie the gun up. It seems to happen when i fill the magazine tube up and not if i only put 4 rds in the magazine. I'm wondering if cutting the spring would help. Any ideas?

Winchester 94? There are at least three Winchester trappers in 357, the 94, 92, and 1873.

Mine will do that if you short stroke it or jiggle the lever.could be wear on the tag on the lever that holds boolits in the mag.

The cartridge stop finger, located top the forward inside end of the lower link is slightly out of spec (too short to hold the next cartridge in the magazine to exit atop the carrier, letting a cartridge exit the magazine when the carrier was raised to chamber the previous cartridge fed from the magazine).

The cure can be applied, with the lower link in the gun, via dropping the front of the lower link down enough to access the side of the stop finger, supporting one side of the stop finger solidly while applying a solid whack with a heavy framing hammer (no tack hammers, or love taps) - which will slightly lengthen the stop finger by swadging.

Elongate the finger until no cartridges can exit the magazine, then dress it down with a file (baby steps) until a cartridge barely feeds.

Alternately, the tip of the stop finger can be built up with welding or brazing, then dressed down as above.

Before (lower, below) & after (upper, below):

On the side(s) of the little finger @ the front of the lower link - w/o hitting the link itself.

If I can do it, you can too - send me a PM if you're interested in me walking you through it.

I had the same problem with mine. Sent it back to factory and it still jammed. Finally sold it to a tool make who said he could fix it. Saw him later and he also sold it. Another problem is sometimes the first shell to be levered will be kicked right out of the action. A guy at a SASS match had this happen and they gave him a safety violation. They told him that he was starting with one in the chamber, which he wasn't.

That's not going to help with shells bypassing. Peen it or if you are going to shoot it a lot (1000 rds) weld it. Those links are soft and won't hold up to a lot of shooting. See post #6 in this thread https://www.levergunscommunity.org/v...repair#p475490
