    Question about Lyman 311008

Just got my Lyman 311008 mold yesterday, and last night I poured about 250 of them. First off, they look really nice. I love the large flat nose on them and they should be deadly on small game out of my 30 30 at around 1200-1300 fps. Should be a fun load for plinking too. I noticed that the bullet appears to have two lube grooves and no crimp groove. My question is should I fill both grooves with lube and crimp on the front driving band? Or just fill the rear groove and crimp in the front groove? I'm hoping someone who has experience with this bullet can offer some advice here. Thanks a bunch!

Two of my earliest moulds were the Lyman 3118 and 31133, the hollow point variation of the 3118. I always lubed both grooves and crimped just over the front band.

Both are wonderful in the 32 H&R.

What do they size out to? Cousin gave me the same mold, and I am considering doing some casting with it.

That would be my approach. I would not roll crimp 30-30 at any time, just not needed when a decent taper crimp will work. Makes the brass last longer.

Good question! I just measured a bunch of them and they're all right at .314. I'm sizing them to .310 for use in my 30 30. Cast from some old COWW's I collected years ago and quenched in water right from the mold.

Thanks for the information. I wanted to know what I was getting into before I fired up my old plumber's forge.

    ElCheapo -
How did the they shoot? And did they cycle well for you? I loaded some up recently and had problems getting them to cycle in my Model 94.
