    .308 would be very close to what a stripped out 5/16 thread would measure. I wonder if it was someone's Idea of a thumb nut for something. The blind hole size and mushrooming on the face make this seem more likely. It may have been the end on a home made slide hammer

    it definitely has an ogive, like it could be a crude boolit mould.
    I'll post a pic of what it produces. Kind of a curiosity, ain't it?

    Drill a small hole in the butt end of the "boolit" (?) then wind in a wood screw and pull. It should come out. Drill just under thread O.D. and don't wind the woodscrew in too far or it will swell the "boolit" and really jam it in!
