Well, this thread sure is interesting. I am just now debating between various Marlin 336-As in .30 WCF and .35 Remington for heavy boolit loads for cow elk this fall. It would appear I would be well-prepared with either caliber and the right cast boolit.

Is it really necessary to gas-check a powder-coated boolit?

If the bullet is designed for a GC, IMHO it should get a GC.

PC dosent replace the need of a PC but at the same time It will do some of the same benifots.

Thinking about this mold from Accurate to develop a load for my Enfield that will likely be pushed to 2200 fps, and it doesn’t have a gas check:

Any reason this design wouldn’t work in any other rifle caliber?

I have been a big fan of R-15 in the 30-30. Posted Alliant data for 170g jacketed is 2330fps for 34.1g. It is a full case load. I am shooting 309-170rf lee bullet over 31.5g for excellent results. There is also a sweet spot at 28.5g. That clocked 1875 before my chrony died. That boollit drops at 180g. R-15 is a little faster than Leverevolution so you have gotten me interested in getting some. As I have done ladder loads it seem that there are usually 2 different sweet spots for accuracy before you go to fast. Has anyone else seen the same behavior?

Should be 1-10 in the 336 and 788 everything else is 1-12

Is your alloy air cooled or water quenched? I have the sister to your rifle in a 1949 model 336A. It makes me wonder what velocity I might get with the 24" barrel?
    Thanks,

.32 Special will be 1-16" which may not appreciate a 190+gr bullet?

It would be easy enough to find out by using Bergers calculator..

I think the boat tail will give you leading and be unevenly battered by the propellant upon firing.

Milsurp Enfields that have had any amount of Mk VII ball run through them are notorious for failing to stabilize boat tail bullets and slinging them wildly. Flat base bullets would shoot fine. Brits went so far as stamp a 7 on machine gun barrels if Mk VII ball had ever been fired through them and restrict them from overhead fire.

    Thanks for the heads up...
My No. 5 MK I shoots very well with factory Hornady Custom HPBT ammo, thought I might be able to duplicate the load with cast powder coated.

    . I have a 36 A and I get about 100-150 fps more than the 20”. Air cooled COWW+2% tin.

Take a look at the Accurate #310190S mold. I bought it on the recommendation of Accurate for a heavier-weight boolit for either my .303 Savage or .30-30. Have cast boolits, and set up dummy cartridges but no range time as of yet.

That looks pretty good. Be interested to hear how it goes in 30-30 testing.

I was able to work up to 2135 fps and a 1” group at 50 yards. Start with the 160 grain load on the can reduced by 10% and work up. This beats the famous 303 Savage 190 grain load by over 200 fps.
I have a Encore that I was not satisfied with the 308W barrel with any of the bullets I tried. An ad popped up from Amazon for a 200 gr. 309 mold, for that money I thought why not, that bullet is shooting great in my 308w.this is the C309-300R from Lee. I am installing the GC with Lee 309 die then powder coating then resizing with NOE .310.i am only pushing it around 1800 as the fastest load I have found listed is 29 gr. of RL 7

31-184c (185+ ready to load) and 33gr leverE does 2100 & MOA. WD COWW & PC, marlin 30/30. Not real heavy but feeds fine and not too much under the shoulder. Did a test on pig carcass, AC SOWW 9 gr unique, 30 in 45 out. IMHO WD for elk.
    Whatever!
