Does anyone or did anyone make a lighter the 300 gr mold in 458 dia for the 45/70. Maybe something around 250 grains. Would save a little lead and cut down on the recoil from my #1

Lyman and a few other make a gallery type mold in 160z225 gr bullets. I've got a NOE 460-186. Nice plinker mold.
Accurate. You can choose diameter. And if i recal correctly there is on list few lighter .458 model
Hi Contenderman,
I'm with Teemu on this one. Accurate moulds would be the way to go. Look at the .45 Colt designs and have it cut to cast @ .458.
I would suggest the Lyman #454190 clone, 255 gr. - RNFP. This boolit is very forgiving for loading and chambering the round.

You may want to check out what are called "collar Button" molds, most outfits make them including Lyman.
I just sent money for a Rapine 458-201 .
Almost all of the 452-454 bullets can be paper patched to fit . Mountain Molds will also cut custom weight and dia . I ordered a 453-350 and got a mould that drops .453@350 gr dead on 100% . The site also has a neat bullet design tool . With a little patience you could have a 460421 at about 260-265 gr or a near 1R 175 gr flat base bullet 460 long . He does need a .19 or larger nose flat .

The collar button or round ball. As mentioned you can paper patch .452 to suit. They work very well.
You gave me an idea> I have a mold that casts 457 dia. balls for my Old Army BP Revolver. Will have to try some. Whats a suitable load/powder
Unique is yet to be a bad choice .
I was cruising Accurate a while back , the have a 220 gr .460 WC listed .

Contenderman, I sent you a PM.
I cast a 150 gr. collar button. PM if interested in some.

There is no problem so great, that it cannot be solved by the proper application of high explosives.
There are videos of people loading round balls into.45-70 cases.
I'll second the Accurate Molds idea!
I tried RB'sin my .44 mag. Marlin and they worked okay but if I sped them up much accuracy went South.
I decided I'd like a collar button but no-one made one at the time for .44 so I looked at Accurate Molds. Tom listed a .45 165 gr. TC design so I asked if he could scale it down. Not long after I e-mailed I got a response ~ he said "Check my catalogue"... and there it was! He listed the 43-165B.
He can scale that up to .458" or .460" or whatever suits you.
Excellent service and excellent mould! I like mine. And I got it for the same reasons you want... less lead used and less recoil for young shooters and ladies (and even me... I'm getting old).

An NOE collar button with Unique or Trail Boss would be perfect for some 45/70 plinking.
I have experimented with balls. The best I got was running a 50cal ball through a .457 size die. I have a old Ideal 330gr Gould HP mold that I machined off to about 272gr for use in 455 revolvers. It shoots pretty good if
you don't push it much over 1000fps. I have another one and shoot them in Trap Doors & RBs with good results.
The round balls I have shot in 357-44-45s and they are accurate with light load at 25'
I have a Saeco 250 gr wadcutter for a 45 Colt that casts out at .456 that I use on occasion in my 45/70 under a charge of 2400 that is pretty accurate out to 50+ yards.
As far as RBs I use 3 of them in one case with a compressed charge of h322 or other powders that can be compressed like bp makes a good buck shot pattern at 30 Yard's
Do not use Unique or other fast burning powder because the first ball can fall down on the powder and will overpressure the case ask me how I know
Ozark Mike: What happened with the Unique? I do that and would like to know.
