sprue plate lube and powder coat

Up to this point, I have been using spray graphite to lube my sprue plate. It works OK, but I have still ended up doing some damage to one of my molds due to streaking lead. I'm thinking of switching to synthetic 2-stroke lube, but I'm concerned that this would mess up my powder coating. Anybody have any experience with this? Do you have to degrease your boolits first? I know that you're supposed to use just the teeny-tiniest bit of lube, but I still worry that it might mess things up.

    Thanks!

    John

It's not been my experience. The heat from the lead tends to just burn it off. I also water quench, but I can't speak to whether or not that's a factor.

I lube all my molds (locating pins, HP pins and sprue plate) with 2 cycle motor oil and a Q-Tip. Its never been an issue for me

OK, thanks, everyone! I'm going to give it a try. And seeing Smoke's reply reminds me that it's almost time to order more powder....

Most of the mold lubes people sell or include with molds is just 2 stroke synthetic oil.

A better solution it run two molds simultaneously. While one mold is cooling the other mold is filled. Production is increased as you are not sitting there waiting and tempted to cut the sprue too soon.

Remember, a little bit goes a loooooooooooooooooong way.

I use a needle tip squeeze bottle to apply the smallest drop of lube/oil possible to the sprue screw to prevent getting oil into a cavity.

I bought some blue stuff at a small shop as I fell for the line the retailer was spillin... was about 10$ for a tiny bottle with a needle applicator. His claim was expensive yea, but a little goes a LONG way...

I don't think its any better then lubes I have used in the past but it dosen't smell and seems to have a very high temp tolerance... but what I like is the applicator. I would buy again, just to get applicator.

Never a issue on any of my PC I could associate to the lube.

    I also water quench.

Stihl 2 cycle synthetic premix oil is the best I’ve used. I put a dab on a rag and wipe the top of the HOT mold, with bullets still in it. Wipe the bottom and top of the spruce plate as well. Works VERY well at keeping lead smears off of both surfaces.

I use aluminum anti seize for the first use and follow with 2 cycle oil thereafter . No problems with PC or Hi-Tek.

I use a crayon. just touch the tip and melt the wax under the sprue plate around the screw, wipe off any excess that gets over toward the cavity (I usually do it with a boolit in the cavity), and you're good to go. I grab the crayons from the kid's meals when we're done at cracker barrel or wherever.
