My Universal powder is a grey/yellow/silvery color. The unburnt flakes transform to a brightish yellow.

I use it for 28 and 16 ga target loads, works fine.

I haven’t used Universal yet, but I bought some in early January this year. After reading all the above posts I checked the look of the contents of my new canister, the label says "Made in Canada - Packaged in USA". The powder appears as very flat flakes with a light dusty reddish pink colour.
There are no grey or black flakes so I think this stuff doesn’t qualify as a ball powder. Hopefully this new formulation won’t be as position sensitive as the old.

You should be O.K., greenjoyti. That sounds just like mine, in the photo I posted here in this thread. I sent the photo to Hodgdon, and they replied back that it looked good and to go ahead and use it. Said that the coloration is due to the graphite coating of the granules that comes out different in different batches. If you look at the edge of the label where it wraps around the jar and meets itself you'll see some tiny numbers which are the lot number. On mine it's: 1042318.

I like it for 38spl and 45acp with heavy loads.
