For lead bullets, especially those traveling at a slower speed, I’ve always felt the wide meplat was far superior. Of course soft lead can readily expand, but with a wide meplat even if it doesn’t you’ll still create a nice large permanent wound channel.
The REAL has a small prominent meplat but has a wide tapering nose. I’ve typically read of people claiming excellent results on game, and quite frankly a nearly .52 cal bullet isn’t small, though initially I figured I’d use the 320 grn version if I were given a chance at something large such as elk, but quite frankly, with a .49 cal ball having such a poor BC, I’d likely use it or the 250 grn version I have (assuming I find accurate loads) on breezy days.
I’ve read of the great results numbers of people have had paper patching the Lee .500 pistol bullet and some who also like the various wide meplat conicals, and so I’ve been reconsidering what I’d really like to use, especially on something large like elk.
I’m curious what those who have used any of the REALs have personally seen as far as wound channel, deformation, performance on game, as well as accurate powder charges (granulation, brand, volume/weight) in either the lighter or heavier in a 1:48” twist.
