Boolit Manufacturers

I’m loading for my son’s 45-70. I purchased some 405 gr. cast boolits;however, the boolit weight consistency was not as I expected—They ranged from 402 to 406 grains. I’m looking for better consistency. Can you recommend a manufacturer?

I have seen this with a lot of manufacturers. The 402 grns to 406 grns does fall into the 1% variance that's some what accepted as okay though. ( Ill bet if you called the maker you would be told that's in tolerance for that weight bullet). In the lower pressure and BP rounds I find most purchased bullets to be to hard for best performance also. For 38-55, 40-65, 45-70 and 45-90 I cast from 20-1 and shoot as cast pan lubing.

You have a couple routes available to you here. 1) Shoot a few as is and see what they do. Compare accuracy to known loads in the rifle. 2) sort out 10 at perfect weight and see how much difference it makes. Using 1 as a comparison. 3) sort into groups of the desired weight range and load and shoot the groups in order

I have used bullets from Buffalo Arms Company in the past to test different styles bullets. These are hand cast and lubed with a known lube. Cast softer than most. But they are more expensive.

A 20 lb lee pot and mould will allow you to cast and maintain the quality control you want at your pace. Casting 405-550 grn bullets the 20 lb pot empties fast. but at 13-16 bullets to a lb it makes a good supply

How far is he shooting?

Load up 5 boolits of each weight with the same charge, shoot 5 targets (1 per weight), you probably won't see a difference

While working up loads for his rifle, we were experiencing groups that were very erratic...2 to 3 shots within an inch of each other at 75 yards and then a bullet or two several inches away. We were getting these results despite the powder charge...(I had loaded several bullets in a ladder). That’s what prompted me to start weighing the bullets.
