The 175 grain 8 mm Sierra worked great for elk and mule deer for my family. I felt it too heavily constructed for our small white tails here in Texas and my bullet of choice became the Hornady 125 grain soft point at 3000 feet per second. It didn't waste as much meat as you would think and the deer dropped like you hit them in the head with a sledgehammer. Sadly Hornady saw fit to discontinue that bullet. My favorite powder was IMR 4064 for all weights. I'm using Hornady 170 grain SST now, but they just sit in the locker while I enjoy cast bullet shooting in my 8 millimeter. I have always thought those Portuguese rifles were neat as well. Sort of a cross between a Mauser and a mannlicher.
