Never thought I'd see one in real life, . . .

Occasionally, I browse my way through the used rack at my local gun store. I hadn't been in there for a couple weeks. I found this on the rack.

The bore looked nice. I was drawn, like a moth to a flame. I was weak.

    The barrel slugged at .308"

I will mainly shoot the Lee soup can and 150, 160 or 170 grain Boolits. Most likely with Unique.
Got any pet, light 788 loads you would like to share?
    Thanks for looking,
    Jeff

1969 model .308 right handed? Bolt is lockable? Those are nice.....I like them because you don't have to lift the bolt as high around your scope. I have a 540X I got through CMP many years ago...fun gun.

That is a nice post 1980 carbine. The straight comb stock and swept bolt handle tells. Nice score! It may be hard to find a load that Won't shoot good. 788's are funny that way.

788's have a great reputation. Wish I could find a nice one that I can afford.

I have a 788 in 44 mag. Perfect rifle for deer. Only negative is poor clip design.
Perhaps my learning skills have diminished in my senior years.. 50 years ago I could read something once and then "have it"... Now I read it about three times, do it a couple of times and then... "have it" only about half the time.

That's a good one to revive if you like shooting dimes at 100 yards. Numrich may have the parts you need.

I have one just like the Op but mine is in 222. Shoots cast very well. Cost me 89.00 dollars at Wal-mart many years ago.

I always wanted one in .30/30. Thought it would make a nice cast shooter.

I had one in 308 that I had for decades. Just a great gun. I gifted it to one of my sons as his first real rifle. He has it still and used it for a while, but in this age of taticool, it is not he rifle he reaches for. I hope one day he appreciates it for the real gun it is.

I had a 788 in 222, cost $100 and shot 1 hole groups. Being a little stupid I got rid of it. Took down a lot of woodchucks! Tim

I trued em, for some reason parts for the small bore 788s are rare as hens teeth. Need a stock, bottom plate and trigger hoop.

I'm another that stupidly sold off a 788. Mine was in 7mm-08. Bought it new quite a few years ago. It was my first new center fire rifle. Great shooter. If the magazine was flush with the stock it would have been perfect. I would not mind having another one.

PS I also had a Mod 581, the rimfire counterpart to the 788.

I always wanted Remington to chamber them in .250 Savage, .35 Rem or .358 Win. My first centerfire rifle was an $85 788 from Gibson's in 22-250. Of course I wish I still had it. I've had several in 22-250, one in .243, and two .308s. They are great rifles, just a tad heavy for me.

That is one pretty 788 for sure. I have several in my collection. Just killed a dandy buck this season with one in 30-30. My chamberings, are .222, .223, .243, .30-30, .308, and have a real good opportunity to procure one in .22- 250 from a shooting buddy of mine. Don't have too much shooting time with cast in my .308.
However it does like the 174 gr. Lachmiller boolits that I shoot out of the .30- 30 version. Can't remember the exact loading, but it is a mid range load out of the Lyman 49th for a similar weight and style. Just a suggestion though. When you seat your boolit seat it out as long as you can as per bore ,or magazine allows. It's been my experience that all my 788s prefer it that way. YMMV - Caster

Mine is an incredibly good cast shooter. Of course I have yet to own one that won't shoot like a death Ray. Great shooting guns to say the least- Caster

I've had several 788s over the years, all good shooters. Had one of the .308 Carbines like this one they made the last couple of years, my brother has it now.

Only one I have now is my 6mm, but it'll never leave. Great rifles, I wish Remington still made it.

    "Bolt is lockable?"
No. Two position safety - and it rides up by magic. At that point, mine ceased to be a hunter.
