7mm rem mag to 7mm wby mag.... somebody oopsed

I picked up 62 fired 7mm rem mag at the range yesterday and could tell right off the bat something wasn't right. They have the rem head stamp but the weatherby radius shoulder. Wish I knew who it was as they are probably not getting the performance they desire and the fix is simple.

Can these cases be fired back to 7mm rem mag? Other ingenious uses? Or should I just send them to the scrap pile in the sky?

I don't have a 7mm of any sort so this would just go in the random brass catalog.

Yeah, my thoughts too. At least he shot the lower pressure round in the stronger gun instead of the other way around..

I've found similar stuff before. 300 Winchester fired in a 300 Weatherby. 308 fired in a 30-06. And the latest, several 357 Sig fired in a 40 S&W. You could probably resize them back to their original case but I'm not sure it would be worth it unless you load that caliber.

I keep brass I find on the range to send down the road as I meet people that shoot that particular cal. Probably a waste of time, but I have gallon bags of cals I don't shoot like 270 30-30 etc, and I hate to see good brass going to waste.

The really strange thing is how much .223/556 brass I find on the range, it is almost like no one remembers the components/ammo shortages of just a few years ago, we are talking a gallon per trip to the range. Oh well, stack it deep I guess.

    I would make them into .350 Rem's.

I fire form brass that's been resized to a different caliber by seating the bullets into the lands, i.e., 223 to 221 fireball, 222 mag to 6x47, or 350 Rem Mag to 6.5 mag all the time. I've done it that way for 40 years without any type of problem, the headspace is set by the bullet.

I hear ya! I recently joined Castboolits sister site ABT and have traded a lot of brass that I don't load for. I've also given away a lot and made lots of loose swaps with buddies. Think PIF's. For some reason it seems like I can't give away 270 or 7mm RM brass. I agree with building a stash as I remember the shortages of '08 and a couple before then.

Not to big a deal this time out - mags space on the belt - at least by design.
Cases may be a little short but are probably ripe for loading 7mm wmags.
Or run them in a rem 7mm FL die and you'd be back to square one.
Some loader would probably take them for free - I know I would if I was
    still in the 7mag game.

I bought the one and only factory loaded box of ammo for a 30-06 back in the early 70's and haven't bought one since. Remington 150 grain SP and went to the range to confirm the sight setting as I had been shooting handloads of the same weight. Second shot didn't sound quite right and recoil was considerably lighter. Time to take a look. I had 2 empties on the bench so I picked one up--headstamp 30-06. Picked the 2nd one up headstamp .25-06. This was in a factory box that was not opened until I got to the range. It had to come from the factory that way. It was the only cartridge in the box marked other than 30-06. I finished shooting that box up on the range that day and reloaded the brass for hunting and haven't bought factory hunting ammo since. By the way, the .25 caliber hole was at the bottom of the 8x11" sheet of paper I was shooting on(a 1" dot magic marker in the cent). Windage was about dead on but elevation was way low. Stuff happens. james

A few years back I was browsing in a LGS ammo section. A 20`ish young man was asking a clerks help in getting some `7mm` factory ammo. The clerk didn`t seem to know what to ask the kid. He instead handed the kid a box of Rem. 7mm Mag. ammo saying this is what he needed. I intercepted the kid on his way to pay for this ammo. I asked a bunch of questions about what he had. Turns out the kid had a Mil Surp sporter `95 Mauser in 7 Mauser caliber! We took the Mag. ammo back and got some Mauser ammo instead. Yessir, real knowledgeable folks work at that LGS!Robert

I wouldn't reform or reload them as cheap and easy as correct brass is to get now days.
But didn't Weatherby make his wildcats by fireforming in other belted chamberings that he reamed out?
    For example:
I'd heard he recut a .300 WinMag chamber to his .300 and fireformed.
Like making a .30-06 Ackley improved case from a regular .30-06.
And you could still do that with his other wildcats, say- Fire form a 7mmRemMag case to become a 7mmWeatherby mag.
Then there might be a issue to anneal , trim, or turn down the necks.

If it was me, I'd hate to just toss 'em out. Maybe if ya posted them over on Selling and Swapping,
somebody would recognize them for what they are, and give them a happy home for enough to cover mailing them.,

It might be worth taking a second look at the headstamp on those cases again! Remington made 7mm WEATHERBY brass for a time. I know because I bought a bunch of it to make into 257 Weatherby brass. It was about half the price of 257 Weatherby brass and all it took to convert it to 257 Weatherby was a single pass in a resizing die.

It is 7mm rem mag brass for sure. The problem with turning it into wby brass is the wby has a much longer neck as I understand. If anyone wants them, I would be glad to give them away, just pm me.

Perhaps they were 7x61 Sharpe & Hart cases. Those have radiused shoulders similar to the Weatherby cartridges. I think the 7mm Rem is about .050" short to make into 7mm Weatherby brass.

Yes, .300 Weatherby is a reamed out and fireformed .300 H&H.

(.300 WinMag came later, and would be too short.)
