What kind of wood is use on wood handles????
Have some Lyman and Saeco that need new handles.
I was thinking of making them with soft wood dowels, then harden then with wood hardener.

Any good close-grain hardwood i.e. Birch, Maple etc. will work well.

I've got a set of Lyman SC handles that have been redone using broom stick, they are about 11" long. They came to me mounted on an obsolete SC mold I purchased from someone here on CB
It looks like birch to me. I can send you some birch dowel scrap if ya can't find anything to suit you where you're at.
Had lunch with the owner of Saeco in 1976 at the NRA convention. He said he got offcuts of figured walnut from stock makers to use for the handles on his molds. As cheap as any other wood and dressed up his handles.
I save handles from broken garden implements like shovels hoes rakes axes and such, they usually are a dense wood and many times have a grain that looks like White Oak. I use these salvaged wood handles for many things that need a wood handle.

I made some nice Oak handles one set of which I still have and are holding up well. They replaced the light weight wood Lee uses. One drawback is the denser Oak transmits heat better and the handles get a little hotter. The lighter wood was cooler but didn't last very long. Is there a hard wood with low density?
These were ripped on a table saw then sanded. I milled the Oak from a deadfall.
Mal
Mal Paso means Bad Pass, just so you know.
Ash works great. It does not have the tendency to split like oak and is a bit less dense, and works and finishes well. I replaced a few handles with oak too. It is not bad but I have some ash and so use that now.
Chill Wills
I use cedar for handles. Lots of it around here.
I bet it smells good to.
